      The Telluride Ski Patrol is seeking qualified individuals for the position of Ski Patrol Supervisor. All candidates must be highly motivated with a thorough working knowledge of ski patrol activities and a desire to contribute to the future of the patrol.       1. MAJOR FUNCTION:

      The Patrol Supervisor is responsible for assisting the ski patrol department in planning, managing and organizing daily activities in accordance with the department functions.

      2. DEPARTMENT FUNCTION:

      The primary function of the Department is to provide safe and efficient rescue and evacuation of injured guests from the mountain. Additional duties of the Department include (but are not limited to):

      • Avalanche risk mitigation
      • Risk mitigation for our guests and employees
      • Evacuation of Aerial Tramways if necessary
      • Detailed incident and investigative reports
      • Proper operations of communication equipment
      • Visual inspection of Aerial Tramways to report safety hazards and evidence of damage or wear.
      • Guest services
      • Crowd Control (Lifts, Trails and Special Events)
      • Enforcement of Mountain Regulations
      • Reckless skier control and documentation

      3. SPECIFIC DUTIES:

      Duties Frequency % of Time

      Risk Management Daily 15%

      • Responsible for safety of guests and employees while on resort property
      • Assists in avalanche mitigation
      • Provide protection and training of staff in related fields
      • Understanding laws and regulations concerning ski area operations

      Documentation Daily 15%

      • Assist in Development of Patrol Best Practices in designated fields
      • Help ensure completion of all required documentation
      • Periodic evaluation of required documentation

      Training Daily 15%

      • Development and evaluation of specific training programs
      • Development of training checklists

      Personnel Daily 20%

      • Involved in selection process for team membership
      • Review and mitigate safety issues in related fields
      • Assign personnel for work missions
      • Ensure that all daily duties are completed
      • Manage available personnel in emergency situations

      Equipment Daily 15%

      • Assist in evaluation, acquisition, and maintenance of equipment
      • Responsible for the training of personnel in safe operation of equipment
      • Responsible for proper operation and care of communication equipment

      Budget Daily 10%

      • Advise Patrol Management on operational needs related to budget
      • Advise Patrol Management on capital budget needs
      • Control expenditures within the scope of approved budget

      Other duties Daily 10%

      • Be familiar with Crisis Management Plans
      • Work closely with community Emergency Management Services
      • Follow up on safety concerns, personnel issues

      4. ASSIGNMENT, REVIEW AND APPROVAL OF WORK:

      • Patrol Supervisor receives work direction from Ski Patrol Director, Ski Patrol Manager.
      • Work direction is provided verbally and in writing.
      • Work in progress is reviewed regularly and approved by Ski Patrol Director, Ski Patrol Manager.
      • Questions regarding the assigned task should be directed to the Ski Patrol Supervisor, Ski Patrol Manager.

      5. RESPONSIBILITY AND DECISION MAKING AUTHORITY:

      • Patrol Supervisor has decision making authority regarding allocation of staff to complete daily duties and missions.
      • Decisions involving departmental policy must be referred to the Ski Patrol Director.

      6. REPORT PREPARATION:

      • Patrol Supervisor is expected to prepare and review Team Incident Reports on a daily basis.
      • Patrol Supervisor is expected to ensure all documentation is completed as directed by Ski Patrol Management.

      7. EQUIPMENT OPERATION:

      • Patrol Supervisor is required to take care of equipment and is required to service or repair equipment.

      8. RELATIONS WITH OTHERS:

      Specialist Patroller will be required to have contact and work with persons both inside and outside of the Company.

      9. WORK DIRECTION:

      Patrol Supervisor directs the work of other employees, both daily and in special projects or teams, at assigned Duty Station.

      10. SUPERVISION:

      Patrol Supervisor supervises staff in special projects or teams and occasionally may supervise a large number of personnel in the event of a large scale emergency. They are responsible for evaluating performance of personnel. They have input into the hiring and firing of personnel.

      11. DIFFICULTY OF WORK:

      The most difficult part of being a Patrol Supervisor is maintaining quality control over all staff members. Physical demands of the job are significant. Mental demands of the job are significant.

      12. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITY:

      • Ability to interact and maintain positive relationships with guests, co-workers and management
      • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in both written and verbal form
      • Skiing ability that enables them to perform all aspects of their job in a safe manner
      • The skills, knowledge and motivation to be a leader of ski patrollers while performing general patrolling tasks and specialized patrolling tasks
      • Ability to work in stressful environments
      • Leads avalanche control routes
      • Trained in snow morning procedures
      • Understands and exercises snowmobile protocols
      • General computer navigation skills

      13. EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

      • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) - College preferred.
      • Outdoor Emergency Care and CPR for the professional rescuer
      • Pro I (or equivalent) Avalanche Course Certification
      • At least 5 years previous patrol experience
      • At least two of the following; Colorado Type I Explosives Permit, EMT-B, OEC Instructors Certification, specialized high angle rescue training, accident investigation training, specialized team membership.

      Other requirements;

      • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
      • Must be an expert level skier
      • Must be able to work for extended periods of time in variable and sometimes extreme weather conditions
      • Must be able to function effectively at elevations of 10,000 feet or higher
      • Must be able to write legibly
      • Must be able to speak and understand English
      • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age
      • Must be able to lead groups and individuals with confidence

      14. LEARNING PERIOD:

      To perform this position competently, a new employee would need a minimum of 5 years of experience in a related field. Learning all aspects of multiple special teams takes the longest.

      15. CAREER PATH:

      A typical career path would involve a solid educational background combined with a background in outdoor recreation, outdoor education as well as involvement in team athletics. The most successful individuals would have a resume that displays a progression of experiences that displays the acquisitions of skills blending with evidence of leadership skills. Typical outstanding characteristics might be a background with Outward Bound, Scouting, National Outdoor Leadership experience, US military background, etc. The most successful candidates have relatively extensive work experience.

      16. WORKING CONDITIONS:

      • Extreme outdoor winter conditions with frequent inclement weather and intense solar radiation
      • The most strenuous activities involve (but are not limited to) such tasks as setting up the mountain with tower pads, ski packing, boot packing, building barriers, skiing patients down in toboggans for long distances, climbing lift towers, hiking in deep snow.
      • The hazards involved in the job are often weather related i.e. deep snow, the chance of avalanches, wind chill and intense solar radiation. The inherent risks of the sport of skiing. Daily wear and tear on your body incurred from extensive time on skis. Some hazards are specific to their special team activity i.e. heights and weather conditions, sliding snow as well as explosives, rock fall, collisions with other skiers or machines and skiing in difficult snow conditions.

      17. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

      The Patrol Supervisor is expected to have the ability to learn the overall operation of the mountain and to operate at a high level in stressful situations. They will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of how all aspects of the operation work together.

      The person in this position will provide superior service to our guests and employees at all times, and will respond to all guests and employees in a courteous, efficient manner. Must be able to think and work as a team player, coordinating our efforts towards a common goal.

      This employee supports company philosophy, goals, and objectives. Must be able to handle multi-tasking and bring these tasks to completion quickly, accurately and in a timely manner.

      Starting rate $30 per hour.

      This is an hourly position and is subject to overtime.

      Position may be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
