- Demonstrated ability to write compelling, error-free copy on tight deadlines
- Demonstrated understanding of graphics and design on the web
- Demonstrated ability to compile and maintain nuanced reporting and analysis of digital properties
- Impeccable attention to detail
- Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work under deadlines, to organize information, and to handle multiple assigned tasks efficiently
- Experience using project management platforms
- Experience in photography and Photoshop (strongly preferred)
- Experience in video and basic graphics editing (strongly preferred)
- Understanding of basic SEO and metadata best practices
- Proficiency on a Mac platform
- Multilingual fluency (orally and in writing) is a plus

Position Summary:
Reporting to the Integrated Content Director, the Social Media Manager will be part of a growing team of communications professionals interested in producing and communicating meaningful, relevant, and impactful work at the Mellon Foundation. The successful candidate will be a very hands-on communications strategist, motivated by the opportunity to activate and care for online communities that are informed, engaged, and empowered by Mellon and the work we support.
We use digital tools and social media as primary channels for bringing our mission and message to broader audiences. As the operator of Mellon’s owned channels, the Manager is a social media champion, demonstrates an expert understanding of digital media, and is motivated to use social media in new and innovative ways for driving engagement with storytelling, announcements, and events from Mellon. They are culturally curious about the topics and projects supported by Mellon and have a track record of entrepreneurial approaches to modes of storytelling. The Manager is also involved with editorial planning, content development, and creative asset iteration. To stay up to date on the performance and features of current and emergent platforms, the Manager maintains relationships with partnership reps from major technology companies, including Meta, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google, and others, as well as understanding current trends, platform changes, and contemporary best practices.
The Manager helps keep a pulse on Mellon’s grantees and their overall sectors, maximizing value from grantees’ earned and social media stories for Mellon’s own channels. The Manager should also maximize opportunities to leverage and repurpose Mellon’s small but growing body of evergreen content.
Position Description:
Responsibilities may include, but will not be limited to the following:
60% Content Development and Publishing. Conceive, organize, develop, and publish compelling copy, photos, and other creative content, working when needed with Mellon’s Creative team, colleagues in content creation, freelance contributors, and other staff. Ensure all published content is factual and error free, aligned with an editorial plan, and that the tone and voice follow messaging platform. Maintain awareness of best practices for digital accessibility and update accordingly.
30% Growth and Engagement. Identify and drive new strategies that build Mellon’s profile. Create meaningful exchanges with online audiences to ensure that anyone who interacts with Mellon has an experience that is consistent with our brand values. Identify and cultivate influencer partners to drive the reach of Mellon’s content and discover new areas of growth. Recommend new handles to follow and engagement opportunities. Collaborate with digital agencies on cross-platform paid campaigns.
10% Measurement and Reporting. Create and maintain instruments for tracking metrics across digital platforms, including social media channels, paid digital advertising campaigns, and the website. This critical information will be utilized to inform media planning and resource allocation and other creative improvements. Monitor sentiment and social listening tools to report on topics and trends of importance to Mellon.

Mellon offers a generous total reward package that includes base salary and a comprehensive benefits program, as well as an excellent working environment. Mellon is committed to providing compensation that is competitive and equitable within the philanthropic sector. The estimated salary range for this role is $125,000- $132,000. The amount of pay offered will be determined by several factors, including but not limited to qualifications, unique skills, credentials, or experience that is expected to impact the candidate’s contribution to the role. We will also consider market data as well as the Foundation’s internal pay equity framework.
Please note that Mellon maintains a hybrid work schedule, with three days per week in person at the Foundation’s Manhattan offices.
