      Reporting to the Manager, Applications Development the Software Engineer III is responsible for the detailed design, documentation, development, unit testing and maintenance of Availity’s Claims Status application. This team is currently updating Java libraries from version 8 to 11 and is preparing for the migration to the cloud (AWS). This position will be roughly 80% backend and 20% frontend focused for full-stack applicants.

      What you will be doing:

      • Supporting the Claims Status team
      • Participating in daily stand ups at 10:00am ET
      • Working in an agile environment
      • Participating in 2-week sprint cycles
      • Gaining exposure and working with AWS
      • Perform unit testing and complex debugging
      • Participating in code reviews
      • Maintaining and writing code for complex systems that address project specifications and guidelines
      • Writing detailed technical documentation for subsystems and identify integration points
      • Estimating work efforts for AIR backlog
      • Assisting team in determining technical feasibility and feedback on new product objectives
      • Partnering with all stakeholders to identify potential slippage or inter-team dependencies
      • Working with other team members to resolve problems or issues
      • Writing programs that span multiple platforms
      • Consulting on database set-up
      • Consulting on integration issues and determine the best integration approach
      • Analyzing existing programs and modify the application code to create enhancement or develop new programs
      • Identifying system requirements and recommend issues and alternatives for change.
      • Able to report missing elements and explain the impacts on subsystems
      • Recommending changes in development maintenance and system standards
      • Working on large, complex projects that require skill and experience in multiple technical environments and process knowledge of a specific business area

      Requirements:

      • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in relevant work experience
      • 4+ years of progressive work experience designing business processes, process mapping, working on process improvement initiatives, and business applications system design
      • Java experience – preferably version 8 and above
      • Experience testing and debugging business application systems and processes
      • Experience integrating both in house developed software and externally purchased software for large applications
      • Web portal development experience
      • Knowledge, skills, and experience to write detailed technical documentation, specifically business requirements and functional specifications for application development
      • Proven ability to implement code-based unit tests
      • Ability and experience to facilitate JAD sessions or other requirements gathering processes
      • Knowledge and ability to apply OOD (Java, HTML, XML, Java Script, and Patterns) and impact to the application development process
      • Leverages Git, Jenkins, Kubernetes/Openshift, Docker, or similar tools for delivery – this team utilizes Openshift
      • Knowledge of web development methodologies (primarily Agile/Scrum), application design, navigation, and information architecture
      • Knowledge of database design and query language
      • Test Driven Development experience
      • HTML, JQuery, and CSS
      • React experience is a plus
      • AWS experience is a plus
