      Job Description:

      Software Engineer Spring 2024 Internship – Remote

      Work as a part-time Software Engineer Intern within the Technology Department. This Intern will have the opportunity to work with Teams that include Tech Platforms and Architecture, People and Finance, Tech Ops, Ground Ops, and EID.

      AirOps

      • Crew Scheduling and Recovery: This Team will be delivering new functionality supporting the Collective Bargaining agreements with Inflight and Flight Ops. They will also be working on the Crew modernization effort that is part of our CEO’s, Bob Jordan, top five initiatives.
      • Aircraft Operations: This Team is supporting our Company's number one objective - "Modernize Operations." On our Team, you will collaborate with Cohearts on modernizing our legacy systems through AWS/Kafka Streams and integration services. Our “Megalopid” Team is focusing on the modernization of our messaging services that help communicate critical, Required to Fly, aircraft events to or from Pilot/Aircraft to our SWA services. They are utilizing tools such as AWS and Confluent Kafka Streams to accomplish that goal.

      Infrastructure

      • Network Engineer/Automation: Automation Engineering is helping Southwest transform the way our networks are managed and utilized on a day-to-day basis by leveraging network automation and DevOps technologies and principles.

      People & Finance

      • Passenger Revenue Accounting Team (SIRAX): This role will support the SIRAX application; virtually any financial activity that comes through Southwest will touch this complex airline revenue accounting application. In this role, you will interact and work collaboratively with multiple Finance Teams, Amadeus, Revenue Management, Integrated Data Foundation (IDF), Marketing, many commercial initiatives/programs across the enterprise, and other various Teams throughout the Company. You will have the opportunity to be innovative and learn in this large system each day on a Team that is particularly invested in collaborating and growing our Team members!
      • People and Communication – Social Business and Communication: This Team has the exciting privilege to Partner with the experts on our SWA Social Business and Communications Teams. They Partner closely with our SWA Social Business Cohearts to deliver technical solutions and capabilities which help power the ability to steer the Company voice through social channels. They also Partner closely with our SWA Corporate Communications Cohearts to deliver technical solutions that enable effective, meaningful communication to our Employees as well enable our Employees to communicate with one another.

      TechOps

      • ETOPS: This Team has been building a system that supports our fleet's Hawaii flight schedule. This Team will continue to work on expanding this program to help turnaround flights more quickly for the entire fleet and look to make this application available on iPads.

      Platforms

      • Enterprise Cloud, DevOps, & Framework (ECDOF): The Cloud Platform Engineering Team is strategic and a foundation to modernizing Southwest Airlines. We are the Team that sets the stage with Enterprise Enablers to accelerate Application Teams AWS Cloud Developer experience through introducing common patterns and automation capabilities.

      As an Intern , you can expect to:

      • Join Southwest as a Spring 202 4 Intern, with a 12-week internship lasting from January 3 0th through April 19th .

      • Work fully remotely, with opportunities to connect with your Team and other workgroups virtually and potential to travel to visit HDQ.

      • Dedicate a minimum of 24 hours each week to your internship responsibilities and tasks, up to 40 hours a week. We recommend checking your s pring schedule now to ensure availability.

      • Receive an hourly pay of $30 and receive a one-time , $500 stipend on your first paycheck.

      • Receive free, unlimited travel privileges for yourself.

      • Interns will receive any required equipment, such as a laptop, for the internship.

      There is limited group of states or localities ineligible for Employees to regularly perform their work off-site. Those ineligible locations are Alaska, California, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, Washington, and Wyoming.

      Duties and Responsibilities:

      The Software Engineer Intern will assist this Department with a variety of responsibilities including, but not limited to:

      • Analyze, design, write program code, test, document, and implement functionally appropriately, technically sound, and well-integrated application systems in accordance with Customer requirements, and organizational methodologies and standards.
      • Respond to production problems and implement immediate resolution efforts across technology areas.

      Basic Qualifications:

      • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required
      • Must be at least 18 years of age.
      • Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.
      • You must have a valid U.S. Social Security Number to complete the full hiring process.
      • This position requires authorization to work in the United States as a permanent employee without sponsorship now or in the future.

      Education:

      • Progress toward undergraduate or graduate degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems or Information Technology, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Business, or similar degree required.
      • Minimum Sophomore status. May not have an undergraduate graduation date of December 2023 or prior, unless already enrolled in a full-time graduate degree program at time of application.
      • To be eligible you must be currently enrolled as a full-time student as defined by your university at the time of application.
      • Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA at the time of application.

      Skills, Abilities, Knowledge, Work Style:

      • Exposure to Agile methodologies preferred.
      • Classroom and/or industry experience with the full software development life cycle preferred.
      • Classroom and/or industry experience with system and acceptance criteria preferred.
      • Classroom and/or industry experience using at least one programming language.
      • Classroom and/or industry experience using Object Oriented Programming (Java) preferred.
      • Exposure or experience with AWS preferred.
      • Classroom and/or industry experience using JavaScript, JSON, XML, HTML, and CSS preferred.
      • Classroom and/or industry experience React preferred.
      • Previous internship or work experience as a Software Engineer within the past 12 months preferred.
      • Involvement in Software Development clubs a plus.
      • Basic knowledge of development methodologies, practices, concepts, technologies and technical options.
      • Demonstrate programming aptitude and ability for logical and abstract thinking.
      • Facilitate or complete Analysis, design, and programming of viable solutions to high complexity business problems according to user specifications.
      • Ability to stay organized and manage multiple and concurrent assignments under tight deadlines.
      • Works well in a culture that is open, direct, respectful, courteous, and compassionate.

      Time Commitment and Pay:

      • Required: Part-Time 24-40hrs a week
      • Must maintain a consistent weekly schedule during normal business hours at a max of 8hrs per day and no fewer than 24hrs per week.
      • Program Dates: January 30th - April 19th, 2024
      • $30 per hour + $500 stipend paid one time on first paycheck
