      As an Intern , you can expect to:

      • Join Southwest as a S ummer 2024 Intern, with a 12-week internship lasting from May 21 st to August 9 th , 2024 .

      • Work fully remote, with opportunities to connect with your Team and other workgroups virtually and potential ly to travel to visit our Corporate Campus in Dallas, TX .

      • There is limited group of states or localities ineligible for Employees to regularly perform their work off-site. Those ineligible locations are Alaska, California, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, Washington, and Wyoming.

      • Dedicate 40 hours each week to your internship responsibilities and tasks.

      • Receive hourly pay of $30 and receive a one-time $1,000 stipend on your first paycheck.

      • Receive free, unlimited space available travel privileges for yourself (taxes and fees may apply on international travel) .

      • Interns will be provided any required equipment, such as a laptop, for the internship.

      The Intern will work full -time as a Software Engineer within the Technology Department . The Intern will have the opportunity to work with Teams that include: Air Operations, Customer & Commercial and Technical & Ground Operations .

      Air Operations

      • Aircraft Operations Integrations : Our Intern will partner with other software engineers on the Team to develop, test and deploy integrations that are needed to bring new vendor solutions to life . The T eam is helping to integrate new solutions that will modernize the NOC enabling Southwest to grow, improve operational reliability and provide a better experience for our Employees and Customers

      • Crew Technology : is an exciting and very fast-paced environment to grow your career. Crew embodies a good mix of technical as well as fun culture where people love to have a good time . We follow work hard play hard mentality.

      Crew Technology builds and maintains software applications for Pilots and Flight Attendants. The majority of applications are in the AWS cloud. We are currently in the process of modernizing Crew Scheduling and Recovery applications with the focus of moving away from monolith to micro-service architecture.

      Customer & Commercial

      • The native app space is a fun, growing area at Southwest . We are investing in improvements to our native app experiences more and more and there is a lot of work to support! We support our Customer facing Android application. The Team supports foundational work for the Android platform as well as initiatives like mobile boarding pass enhancements, as well Customer Experience improvement enhancements like bag tracking. Interns will have the opportunity to support existing commitments for Android projects as well as participate in Technology wide innovate opportunities. A day in the life will consist of attending SAFe ceremonies with the Team and completing development supporting projects and enhancements. Attending fun culture events with other interns as well as with your native development Team!

      Technical & Ground Operations

      • The heart and soul of Southwest Airlines are its people and the Boeing 737. The only IT team at the company that can give you great exposure to both is by joining Technical Operations Technology. Tech Ops as it is called, is the organization within Southwest Airlines that manages and maintains a growing fleet of nearly 1000 737s . The day-to-day upkeep of a fleet that size across a large flight network is a complicated logistical and supply chain problem. To ease the burden of this operation we use and invest in some of the most cutting-edge technology in the industry. You will be working with emerging cloud infrastructure techniques, data streaming trends and gain exposure to some of the industry use cases for AI, machine learning and data analytics. To be successful in this role you need to be highly technical and have a very solid base in any major programming language . You must also enjoy the challenge of working in a highly complex dynamic technological environment where trends change very rapidly. Lastly you must love aviation, this job like no other will expose you to people that love aircraft and are passionate about aviation safety.       D uties and Responsibilities:

      • Analyze, design, write program code, test, document, and implement functionally appropriately, technically sound, and well-integrated application systems in accordance with Customer requirements, and organizational methodologies and standards.

      • Respond to production problems and implement immediate resolution efforts across technology areas.

      B asic Qualifications :

      • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required

      • Must be at least 18 years of age.

      • Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.

      • You must have a valid U.S. Social Security Number to complete the full hiring process.

      • This position requires authorization to work in the United States as a permanent employee without sponsorship now or in the future.

      E ducation :

      • Progress toward undergraduate or graduate degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems or Information Technology, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Business, or similar degree required .

      • Minimum Sophomore status. May not have an undergraduate graduation date of May 2024 or prior, unless already enrolled in a full-time graduate degree program at time of application.

      • To be eligible you must be currently enrolled as a full-time student as defined by your university at the time of application.

      • Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA at the time of application.

      Knowledge, Skills , Work Style and Abilities:

      • Exposure to Agile methodologies preferred.

      • Classroom and/or industry experience with the full software development life cycle preferred.

      • Classroom and/or industry experience with system and acceptance criteria preferred.

      • Classroom and/or industry experience using at least one programming language.

      • Classroom and/or industry experience using Object Oriented Programming (Java) preferred.

      • Exposure or experience with AWS preferred.

      • Classroom and/or industry experience using JavaScript, JSON, XML, HTML, and CSS preferred.

      • Classroom and/or industry experience React preferred.

      • Previous internship or work experience as a Software Engineer within the past 12 months preferred.

      • Involvement in Software Development clubs a plus.

      • Basic knowledge of development methodologies, practices, concepts, technologies and technical options

      • Demonstrate programming aptitude and ability for logical and abstract thinking.

      • Facilitate or complete Analysis, design, and programming of viable solutions to high complexity business problems according to user specifications.

      • Ability to stay organized and manage multiple and concurrent assignments under tight deadlines.

      • Works well in a culture that is open, direct, respectful, courteous, and compassionate.

      Time Commitment and Pay:

      • Required: Full-time 40hrs a week

      • Must maintain a consistent weekly schedule during normal business hours at a max of 8hrs per day.

      • Program Dates: May 21st – August 9 th 2024 .

      • $30 per hour + $1 , 000 stipend paid one time on first paycheck .
