  Since we were founded in 1961, the number of deaths in the UK from coronary heart disease each year has more than halved. But we still have so much to do. British Heart Foundation (BHF) funds research into all forms of heart disease, discovering molecules in the lab, harnessing the power of big data, funding impactful clinical trials to improve the presentation, detection, and treatment of these diseases.

  About the Software Engineering Graduate programme

  As one of our Software Engineering Graduates you’ll be responsible for designing and developing software for several different projects and activities in the technology directorate.

  You’ll work on the full stack of technologies used to deliver solutions for our large-scale improvement projects as well as enhancements to ongoing initiatives.

  This is a permanent role with the first 24-months being a graduate development programme. The salary is £26,000 per annum + benefits.

  What we’re looking for:

  You’ll be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

  • STEM Degree 2:2 or above
  • Practical knowledge of at least one programming language (For example #, Java or Python although other languages will be considered) obtained through writing software
  • An awareness of the software development lifecycle and the activities that occur from the analysis through to the deployment of software
  • Capability to analyse, interpret, explain and summarise complex data and in a logical manner
  • Ability to think ahead and demonstrate effective problem-solving skills
  • Excellent listening, written and verbal communication skills able to adapt verbal and written communication to different audiences
  • Able to prioritise competing tasks and balance multiple deadlines
  • Able to adapt to changing environments
  • Able to use a variety of problem-solving techniques to improve service
  • Some understanding of SQL and knowledge of Design Patterns

  • Self-motivated and committed to achieving targets
  • An interest in clean code practices obtained through reading books, websites and videos
  • Knowledge of .NET
  • Demonstrates strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to analyse and implement enhancements to applications, identify and fix bugs, work out how to use and improve third party development tools etc.

  • You’ll work on specific projects and business-as-usual activities in technology operations, engagement, and delivery.
  • You’ll develop software including technical analysis, coding, and unit testing
  • This role will allow you to collaborate with business analysts, product owners and testers within an Agile Scrum Methodology to deliver application enhancements
  • An understanding to adopt good coding practices and design patterns
  • Able to use the devOps pipeline for software delivery
  • Become a pro-active team member, playing a full part in agile meetings, and shared and individual learning events
  • You’ll be able to produce and maintain development documentation in Jira, confluence and other tools used by the agile team.

  Working arrangements

  This is a blended role, where your work will be dual located between your home and our London office.

  At the BHF we believe in the power of being together, so our colleagues on blended contracts can expect to spend some time in their office, at least one day each week, on average. The use of our office spaces is driven in part by your role and the activities you need to do. This may vary from time to time, so you will need to work in a flexible way to unlock your best work for our cause.
