The Nebraska State Historical Society is looking for an enthusiastic and proactive individual to join the team as a Gift Shop Attendant at the Capitol Gift Store located in the Nebraska State Capitol. This position is part of the NSHS visitor services team and plays a vital role in ensuring that visitors have a positive experience in the newly reopened gift store.
Job Description:
Responsibilities include processing transactions using a POS system, restocking merchandise, and keeping the shop organized and clean. The Gift Shop Attendant will work alongside a dedicated group of professionals and volunteers to promote the missions and initiatives of the Nebraska State Historical Society. Additionally, the role involves developing and maintaining positive relationships with Capitol visitors and staff, as well as helping connect visitors to history through our gift shop.
Schedule: Monday to Friday, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with occasional events outside of these hours.
The Nebraska State Historical Society is a statewide educational institution that connects people to the past through our library and research center, conservation facility, interpretive sites, and state archaeology and historic preservation offices.
Job duties
•Oversees front-end customer service under the supervision of the gift store lead. This includes daily operations such as opening and closing registers, greeting visitors, answering phones, promoting society programming, highlighting capitol and museum connections to merchandise, answering guest questions, and accepting payment for merchandise and services.
• Carries out opening and closing procedures, including stock checks, ensuring phones and point-of-sale systems are working properly, and follows proper cash-handling procedures.
• Answers the phone and relays calls and messages in a timely manner.
• Monitors gift shop security activity and reports Issues to appropriate parties.
• Assists with restocking and completing quarterly gift shop inventory.
• Receiving and checking in merchandise deliveries, setting up merchandising displays, and assisting with merchandise checks and the inventory process
• Maintains appearance and cleanliness of gift shop, which includes light housekeeping functions.
• Assist with setting up, tear down, and staffing of gift shop special events.
• Coordinates with staff, volunteers, and work-study students to ensure that the gift shop is adequately staffed
• Communicate and enforce the git shop policies and procedures.
• Provide support as needed at the Nebraska History Museum
• Other duties as assigned within the scope of the classification.
Requirements / Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Experience in public contact OR coursework/training or experience in history, art history, recreation, event planning, or areas related to Nebraska history, geography, or culture.
Preferred Qualifications: Coursework/training or experience in customer service, retail, sales, recreation, Nebraska history, or otherwise working directly with the public. OR Post-high school coursework/training in social/behavioral science or business administration. Demonstrated experience in a retail environment. Fluency in Spanish.
Other: This position requires travel. As such, the incumbent must be able to present a valid driver’s license or another form of reliable transportation.
