- Work with the project team to advance the objectives of the Avanzamos Project
- Research employment opportunities in the region and the country that seek bilingual candidates and identify ways to fill needed positions
- Identify, solicit, document, and respond to the needs of industry partners
- Research interpretation programs and curriculum to recommend a specific model to teach Spanish interpretation
- Develop Spanish interpretation curriculum including learning outcomes and assessment
- Work with the curriculum committee to create overlap between interpretation curriculum and general ed curriculum to allow for timely graduation
- Oversee development of the program to ensure compliance with curriculum committee and accreditation regulations
- Determine best practices for testing and certification of interpreters
- Collaborate with other divisions (Nursing, Business, Natural Science and Health, etc.) to develop pathways to employment for bilingual students
- Periodically translate informational materials and signage from English to Spanish
- Eventually teach courses in Spanish and interpretation
- Comply with all federal regulations in accordance with the Department of Education
- Collaborate with Project Director to provide faculty development in culturally responsive pedagogy
- Apply evidence-based practices to improve academic and career student outcomes
- Work with Avanzamos team to foster an authentic climate of belonging that validates Hispanic students, recognizing their cultural wealth and channeling it for students’ social mobility
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Spanish, linguistics, applied linguistics, Education with an emphasis on language acquisition, or a related field
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
- Experience working with Hispanic, first-generation, and other historically underserved undergraduate populations
- Experience with teaching interpretation
- Experience with curriculum development
- Knowledge of the curriculum development, approval, and accreditation processes at private universities
- Knowledge of regional employer needs
Summary Description: WPU is a private, Christian, liberal arts college in Portland, Oregon. WPU has been designated a Hispanic Serving Institution by the federal government, with 32% of undergraduates identifying as Hispanic. The institution has been awarded a 5-year Developing Hispanic Serving Institutions grant by the Department of Education, through which this position will be funded. This role is developmental in nature.
The Spanish Curriculum Developer will be the primary individual responsible for developing, launching, enrolling, and monitoring Spanish Interpretation Certification and degree programs designed to support students in attaining careers as interpreters and recognized bilingual professionals.
This individual will coordinate with teaching faculty to ensure curriculum and pedagogy is equity-minded and that all faculty participate in project-sponsored professional development.
Primary Job Duties:
The position is located in a typical office environment. Professional/business casual attire is required.
