      Job summary

      We have flexible bank shifts and long-term placement opportunities available for HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists available at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.

      The successful applicant will initially be assigned to one of the Specialist areas of Biochemistry, which include Metabolic Chromatography, Trace Elements, LC-MS, and Endocrinology. You may be assigned to other parts of the Biochemistry laboratory as per service need.

      Main duties of the job

      The lab provides a comprehensive 7-day service covering bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, virology, serology and parasitology, and molecular testing. You will rotate across these sections. You will be required to work shifts on a 24/7 rota system, which includes weekend and bank holiday working, and early/day/late/night shifts.

      Job responsibilities

      • To analyse specimens for screening, diagnostic purposes and the clinical management of patients
      • To interpret clinical request forms and exercise judgement regarding work to be performed and priority relating to clinical urgency
      • To handle a range of body fluids, tissue samples and other infectious material according to category II containment procedures
      • To handle chemicals according to COSHH regulations
      • To handle radioactive materials according to IRMA regulations
      • To deal with spillage of samples/chemicals in a safe and appropriate manner when necessary
      • To use laboratory equipment safely in accordance with local and manufacturers guidelines.

      • - IBMS Specialist Diploma in Medical Microbiology or Virology (from 2005) or working towards this Qualification

      • - Good communicator
