Lead Alberta’s EA process for proposed energy development projects as required under EPEA, by coordinating AER internal multidisciplinary teams and facilitating multiagency reviews of proposed energy development projects.
Review and recommend whether proposed projects require environmental impact assessment (EIA) reports, develop standardized and project-specific terms of reference (TOR), validate supplemental information request (SIR) questions, and recommend whether EIA reports are technically complete.
Provide direction on projects’ timelines and objectives, and act as a project manager to ensure reviews meet the deliverables milestones, work plan, and schedule.
Organize and facilitate energy development project meetings and workshops, and educating attendees when necessary to ensure the project, process timelines, and objectives are understood. Act as the primary liaison with representatives from industry and government during the bundled application review process, including but not limited to, regulatory requirements associated with mining, in situ and processing plant projects.
Ensure project-specific issues are timely identified, communicated to leadership team, and resolved with the support of the multidisciplinary teams involved in the review process. Prepare technical memos, briefing notes, and status reports to inform the AER's senior management and provide recommendations to the leadership.
Support the consideration of statements of concern, provide support to appeal and hearing processes, including Alternative Dispute Resolution sessions.
Support internal and external action requests and media inquiries by gathering all necessary information and presenting it clearly and concisely.
Support sector initiatives and enterprise projects by providing technical guidance and input and supporting the implementation into our core business functions while collaborating with stakeholders (internal and external) as necessary.
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or a related field/discipline. Eligible for or registered as a Professional in Environmental Sciences is an asset.
5+ years of direct experience with Alberta’s EA process as described in EPEA, for proposed projects and EIA reports in the Energy sector.
Knowledge of Alberta’s Specified Enactments, particularly EPEA, Water Act, Energy Resource Enactments and Public Lands Act, and how they apply to various application scenarios.
Ability to build and maintain working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Effective communication skills, both verbal and written including technical writing, capable of communicating complex technical information to a variety of audiences and facilitate meetings.
Self-leadership and ability to share expertise with other subject matter experts. Work effectively and willingly with others within the team and other resources within AER.
Possess a fully valid class 5 driver’s license along with a positive driving record.

Employment Type: Full Time – Limited Term- Anticipated duration 12 months
Salary Range: SP3, Level 5, $91,200 – $114,00 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

The Opportunity
The Alberta Energy Regulator is recruiting for an Environmental Assessment Specialist to join its talented team of professionals in the Mining group within the Regulatory Applications Branch. As an Environmental Assessment Specialist, you will lead and coordinate the environmental assessment (EA) process for proposed energy development projects for Oil Sands and Coal Mining, and In Situ, as required under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA), by applying regulatory process and technical expertise to understand potential environmental impacts from the proposed energy development projects (locally and regionally).
