      Overview

      The HIV Prevention Specialist I provides quality and comprehensive HIV Health Education, HIV counseling and testing, and facilitates HIV Prevention interventions to clients at high risk for infection or transmission of HIV. Core responsibilities include recruitment, client intake and assessment, facilitation of individual and/or group sessions. HIV counseling and testing, linkage to care services, and coordination of referral services into other appropriate programs. All program activities will address and empower each client’s efforts to reduce the risk of HIV infection or transmission.

      Responsibilities

    • Provide excellent customer service at all times, to internal and external customers.
    • Participates in comprehensive training sessions (including monthly clinical supervision) for prevention.
    • Approximately 50% of time is dedicated to providing HIV Counseling and Testing.
    • Clearly and accurately Completes required documentation for HIV Prevention programs including HIV Counseling and Testing Forms and consents, client satisfaction surveys, Program screeners, sign-in sheets, incentive logs, program forms, etc.
    • Maintains updated referral list of community resources for HIV Prevention programs through research and networking with diverse organizations and constituencies including the HIV/AIDS, Latino, African American, and GLBTQ (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning) communities.
    • Coordinates with AltaMed programs and other agencies to ensure successful completion of linked referrals.
    • Participates in regular internal audits to ensure that program documentation, charts and reports are accurate and complete on a monthly basis.
    • Promotes HIV Prevention services through in-service presentations to AltaMed staff and other agencies.
    • Assists with the development and facilitation of educational HIV/STI workshops.
    • Participates in program, departmental and division staff meetings.
    • Completes a minimum of 16 hours of continuing education as required by the County HIV Counseling and Testing certification.
    • May be required to drive the HIV Mobile Testing Unit.
    • Responsible for performing other duties as assigned.
    • Qualifications

    • High School Diploma or equivalent work experience.
    • Preferred Bachelor of Arts Degree and preferably experience in a non-profit setting. Otherwise, a minimum of one year’s experience working in an HIV prevention program or an HIV/AIDS related human services field such as social work, psychology, nursing, counseling or health education.
    • Must successfully pass the counseling and testing certification provided by the Los Angeles County Division of HIV and STD Programs within 3 months of employment.
    • Trained in Motivational Interviewing and demonstrates a capacity to deliver client-centered counseling.
    • Demonstrated skills in Presentation and Group Facilitation.
    • Applicant must demonstrate skill (through education or experience) in counseling, crisis intervention, critical reading and writing as it relates to implementation of program goals and objectives.
