- Extensive knowledge of spiritual health care and/spiritual counselling and its application within the hospital environment.
- Working knowledge of healthcare ethics, and various spiritual and cultural traditions.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with leadership, medical staff, allied health professionals and other Island Health staff, community spiritual leaders, patients/residents/clients and the public.
- Ability to lead self and represent the Spiritual Health program as a site leader and clinical specialist.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills including interpersonal and leadership skills, instructional skills, problem-solving ability and conflict resolution skills.
- Excellent assessment, care planning and coordination skills.
- Ability to work independently, plan and organize workload, maintain flexibility and establish priorities.
- Ability to practice sound professional judgement, empathy, tact and integrity.
- Ability to take initiative and make effective decisions in crisis situations.
- Ability to operate related equipment such as a PC utilizing an office suite of software applications.

Reporting to the Manager or designate and under the supervision of the Spiritual Health Leader, as a member of the healthcare interdisciplinary team, provides support, consults and educates on comprehensive spiritual care for patients, their loved ones, health care staff and volunteers to enhance the spiritual health and holistic wellness of individuals, teams and communities, and the organization as a whole. This includes administrative duties; development and oversight of resources; liaising with community-based spiritual, religious and cultural care providers (Community Spiritual Visitors); and collaborating on initiatives.
The Spiritual Health Practitioner practices in a manner that is respectful of and appropriate to all belief systems, cultures and identities and works within the Framework for British Columbia's Spiritual Health Professionals Scope of Practice and adheres to Spiritual Health policies as posted in VIHA policies and procedures. Ethical behavior is congruent with the values of the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care/ACSS Code of Ethics reflecting justice, compassion and healing for all.
Travel is a requirement of this position and transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of the Vancouver Island Health Authority.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Training And Experience
Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g. theology, pastoral care, spiritual counselling or cultural care); and
Able to demonstrate the competencies described by the 2019 Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC) for a Spiritual Care and Counseling Specialist. Ordination or appropriate Ecclesiastical endorsement, or three letters of reference from individuals who can attest to the applicant's commitment to a spirituality or religious faith and the ensuing practices which inform his or her vocational identity as a spiritual care practitioner. These letters of reference will address how the applicant demonstrates accountability to those identified as his or her spiritual community and will be dated within three months of the date of his or her application for the position; andA minimum of one advanced unit of Clinical Psycho-spiritual Education (CPE) through the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care, or equivalency; and
Eligible for membership with the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC); and
Valid BC Driver's License.
An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.
