      The Senior Data Engineer will join the enterprise Data Management team as a technical leader and designer and builder of the bank’s evolving Enterprise Data Platform (EDP). In this role, the incumbent will work in conjunction with the business to design and implement logical and physical data warehouse structures, extract transform and load (ETL) processes that support current analytics, reporting needs and business initiatives. As a data-innovator, the incumbent will help to guide the bank’s efficient use Azure cloud to support the bank’s business and growth objectives.

      MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

      • Work closely with constituents at all levels throughout the organization to identify and define innovative solutions to extend the bank’s Enterprise Data Platform. Design, develop, and maintain optimal data pipeline architecture and ETL/ELT load processes, consistent with Eastern Bank architecture standards, providing optimized and secure access to these data sources. Participate in design and build of scalable data processing and analytics solutions to expand our evolving data platform. Work with business lines and technology architects to continually evolve and expand the corporate data store to provide increasing value to the enterprise.
      • Design and develop optimized data structures in support of Business Intelligence (BI), analytics and reporting. Recommend strategies to improve performance and capacity of BI tools. Suggest and build platform operations to increase efficiency and resiliency in overall operations. Develop and manage the necessary governance for providing end-user and end-system access to warehouse resources.
      • Ensure reliable operation and acceptable performance of Eastern Bank’s internal data platform technologies. Assume responsibility for and resolve all operational and performance issues as they arise. Actively collaborate with team members to troubleshoot production issues and work to resolution. Additionally, participate in formal on-call rotation for production support and off-hours technical support for the data platform.
      • Participate in proof of concept exploration to guide future direction for enterprise data platform. Develop, manage, and publish the necessary enterprise architecture artifacts, including the evolving data warehouse data dictionary. Define both administrative and development standards for the platform and oversee compliance with those standards
      • Chart and execute a physical data plan roadmap the continually evolves the bank’s data availability and utility through the use of emerging techniques and technologies for both operational and analytics applications.
      • Off-hours support, on a rotating schedule, is expected. Job will be based out of the Lynn, Massachusetts location.

      PROBLEM SOLVING & DECISION MAKING:

      The individual must have the ability to work with all levels of staff and management of business lines to understand desired business requirements and to design, document, implement, and validate solutions that meet those requirements. Individual will be responsible for leading the design and development of data structures, as well as extract, transform and load (ETL) and cleansing processes to complete assigned projects. The individual will need to be able to represent and convey the data architecture and strategy to others in meetings. This role will share in the responsibility for managing the bank’s data platform to ensure expected performance, necessary controls, data validity, audit management, and internal operational support expectations and methods. Must have the ability to evolve data definitions and structures over time to meet the changing needs of the enterprise. Assist in investigation of new technologies/methodologies to strengthen the reliability, sustainability of the data platform.

      REQUIREMENTS:

      Education and Experience

      • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
      • 10+ years of experience with deep understanding of both traditional and modern data architecture and processing concepts, including relational databases
      • 5+ years of experience with Data Warehouse analysis, design and development. Development of new and maintenance of existing SSIS packages and processes
      • Significant experience with cloud-based infrastructure and development in Azure
      • Experience with BI tools (PowerBI), data visualization concepts
      • Experience with creation of enterprise data lake using Azure services including Azure Data Factory and ADLS2
      • Demonstrable experience in designing objects for MPP database platform

      Skills/Knowledge

      • Significant proven experience with ETL/ELT design and implementation for large datasets
      • Mastery of structured query language (SQL) (T-SQL, PL/SQL, Postgres, etc.)
      • Demonstrated experience in design, coding, testing, and maintenance of technical solutions using SQL, T-SQL, views, stored procedures, indexes
      • Demonstrated experience with build of Azure SQL DB/DW and Azure Data Factory pipelines
      • Extremely strong analytical ability, proactive problem-solving skills, performance tuning, and debugging skills
      • Experience in software development lifecycle including Agile methodology required
      • A good communicator who can express their ideas, consider others’ and make informed decisions
      • Self-directed and motivated with the drive to work independently on multiple concurrent projects while making effective progress
      • Experience with Azure Synapse Analytics , Databricks, Power Platform a plus
      • Experience with github CI/CD, automated deployments a plus
      • Experience with Splunk, Datadog or other log analysis tools a plus

      PHYSICAL DEMANDS

      While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time. The employee frequently is required to operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and printer. The employee is frequently required to move about inside the office to access workstations, office machinery, and other equipment. They also occasionally travel to locations outside of the facility, to attend meetings, trainings, events, and other business activities. The employee must have the ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. The employee must have near visual acuity for working on a computer, far visual acuity, and peripheral vision necessary for driving a motor vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move boxes or equipment up to 50 pounds across office for various needs.

      Working Conditions

      Persons holding this position are generally subject to inside environmental conditions having the lighting, temperature, and noise level of an open floor-plan office environment (moderate, but occasionally loud at times). This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. Occasionally the employee will need to move self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces, e.g., under desks and server rooms. They occasionally will be required to travel to other work locations.
