Job Description

- Interface with Electrical Engineers, Optical Engineers, Industrial Designers, and Process Engineers to negotiate basic tradeoffs between manufacturing, appearance, and performance
- Master CAD-user able to complete the most difficult tasks
- Complete complex mechanical designs for Garmin or OEM products
- Mockup and test complex opto-mechanical systems to verify compliance with design requirements
- Good knowledge of injection molding, die casting, sheet metal stamping, machining, etc.
- Good knowledge of material requirements, material performance, and material limitations
- Specify test plans to validate very complex systems with complex performance requirements
- Manage basic tradeoffs and determine risk mitigation plans as appropriate
- Make estimates on moderately complex mechanical designs including: tooling, part cost, and design time
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to drive process vendors to evaluate complex mechanical designs and understand the risk
- Makes substantial contributions toward determination of project goal/objective feasibility
- Mentors and provides guidance to less experienced Mechanical Engineers (1 & 2) on technologies, cost analysis, design techniques and problem-solving process
- Provides technical input to product development plans and concept documents
- Provides reliable solutions to a wide range of difficult problems using sound problem solving techniques
- Offers process improvement suggestions and authors new procedures as required
- Applies good judgment in setting schedules and risk taking
- Independently determines general approach and specific solutions to technical problems
- Applies knowledge of production and operations issues as they relate to engineering
- Overseas travel as required to Garmin’s factories in Taiwan
- Demonstrated knowledge and capability to use CAD software for completing complex mechanical designs (Solidwork and/or OnShape)
- Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
- Electronic packaging design experience
- Mechanical packaging design experience for optical elements and sub-assemblies
- Thorough knowledge and application of GD&T and tolerance analysis principles

Overview
We are seeking a full-time Senior Mechanical Engineer at our site in Portland, OR. This site focuses on designing consumer optics products employing optical systems (such as handheld laser rangefinders). In this role, you will develop complex mechanical solutions, test and validate, complete technology explorations and/or deliver to mass production. Other essential functions include:
