      Job Description:

      The People of Southwest Airlines come together to deliver on our Purpose, which is to connect People to what’s important in their lives through friendly, reliable, and low-cost air travel. The Sr Operations Research Data Scientist invests in the future of Southwest’s People by supporting the Insights and Forecasting Team with reporting on daily and monthly on-time performance (OTP) for the Network Operations Center (NOC) and Executives. This role co llaborates with teams in Tech nical Op erations (Tech Op s ) , Network Planning , and Integrated Ops Planning to facilitate project work. In addition, this role interprets large ambiguous datasets to develop optimized models that influence strategic decisions . The Sr Operations Research Data Scientist is a self -starter who is proactive and excited to support strategic init i atives that drive the future of Southwest.

This role is a hybrid position based out of our Corporate Campus in Dallas, TX, which requires Employees to work at a Company facility at least three days a week. The Department designates the specific three days of the week Employees must work on-site.

      Responsibilities

      • Utilize mathematical modeling, statistical analysis, and optimization techniques to create models that mimic real-world scenarios in the form of descriptive, diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive analytics to aid in strategic decision-making

      • Advanced data modeling, which includes collecting, cleaning and analyzing large, structured and unstructured data to extract meaningful insights by identifying patterns, trends and correlations in order to inform decision making

      • Structure complex and ambiguous problems and act to holistically solve them

      • Proactively identify opportunities for optimization and improvement within the operation by working closely with business partners to understand the business challenges and operational inefficiencies.

      • Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies and best practices in operations research and act as a thought leader and serve as a trusted advisor

      • May perform other job duties as directed by Employee’s Leader

      Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
      • Expert knowledge of statistics, math concepts, operations research and/or optimization experience such as simulations, descriptives, diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive analytics
      • Skilled in compiling, cleaning, transforming, analyzing and visualizing large-scale data
      • Advanced skilled in mathematics, statistics principles, and programming languages to write queries for large-scale analysis (SQL, Alteryx, Python, R etc)
      • Expert knowledge in evaluating appropriate data analytics and statistic method(s) for a business problem using both inductive and deductive reasoning to interpret data, draw implications, and adapt approaches if needed to fit the business strategic objective
      • Ability to communicate in an engaging way with strong verbal and written communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences up to and including executives
      • Ability to self-start and work autonomously with limited and disparate information
      Education
      • Required: High School Diploma or GED
      • Required: Bachelor's Degree

      Experience
      • Expert level experience, seasoned and specialized knowledge in:
        • Applied statistics, simulation, data modeling, optimization
        • Programming and query writing (SQL, alteryx, Excel, Tableau, etc.)
        • Data analysis, advanced analytics, data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, or optimization project experience
        • Solving ambiguous and complex problems through a systems thinking approach

      Physical Abilities
      • Ability to perform work duties from [limited space workstation/desk/office area] for extended periods of time
      • Ability to communicate and interact with others in the English language to meet the demands of the job
      • Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed and accuracy to meet the demands of the job

      Other Qualifications
      • Must maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards as described in established guidelines
      • Must be a U.S. citizen or have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986
      • Must be at least 18 years of age
      • Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines

      Pay & Benefits

      Competitive market salary from $151,400 per year to $168,200 per year* depending on qualifications and experience. For eligible Leadership and individual contributor roles, additional bonus opportunities are available and awarded at the discretion of the company.
