      Job Title: Staff Gemologist (Colored Stones)

      The Location: This position is located in the heart of the diamond district in mid-town Manhattan , New York . This position in on-site five days a week, Monday - Friday.

      Job Summary:

      Responsible for the preliminarily identification of gem characteristics in accordance with data self-collected and collected by the Analytics team. Advises others if data needs to be collected in a specific manner.

      Responsible for making preliminary conclusions on gems, making necessary identification and classification calls that are required for each specific type of report requested by clients.

      Enters concluding results into software for report generation or seeks further evaluation by the Management Team. Ensures data is stored correctly to servers.

      Key Responsibilities:

      • Identifies and documents the characteristics of gems.

      • May use standard, high tech, and specialty gemological testing equipment to examine and identify gems to determine if they are natural and if they have been treated or enhanced in any form.

      • Works with Analytics team, as needed, to obtain data from advanced gemological equipment.

      • Where doubt exists gemologists are expected to work as a team with their colleagues to reach the correct conclusions.

      • Enters gemological data into computer database.

      • May input identification information and assign a preliminary conclusion to a report or provide back-up to a preliminary report.

      • May provide data collection for research projects when assigned.

      • Keeps abreast of the latest gemological information within the industry.

      • Assist in training new staff (trainees) learning their new roles & responsibilities.

      Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

      • Knowledge of Analytical Chemistry, Solid State Physics, or one of the Earth Sciences and some statistical abilities.

      • Able to operate standard and advanced gemological instruments.

      • Ability to get along with a diverse group of individuals.

      • Able to communicate professionally (communicate respectfully, listen, articulate/explain issues, use of professional tone, know when and how to communicate effectively with different types of communication tools, proficient in both oral and written communication skills); deals with colleagues effectively and professionally under pressure.

      • Proficient computer skills (e.g. able to use excel).

      • Accurate, detail-minded and good concentration skills.

      • Ability to multi-task / be flexible / work under pressure.

      • Solid judgment / decision making abilities.

      • Basic problem-solving abilities - able to recognize problems and fix or escalate.

      • Team-oriented (works well with others).

      • Language Skills-Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

      • Reasoning Ability- able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Knows when to ask questions.

      Supervision / Autonomy / Authority:

      Works under direct supervision with limited or no day-to-day instruction.

      Education / Training / Experience Requirements

      • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Geology, Earth Sciences or related fields; and minimum of 1 year of related gem identification experience as well as experience with analytical equipment and data analysis; or equivalent combination of training and/or experience.

      • Graduate Gemologist and/or FGA diploma required.

      Pay Range

      $37.00 - $38.00 per hour
