      Are you interested in science, technology, engineering, arts or math?


      Are you a high school junior or senior and an Elgin resident?

      This summer we are hiring 10 students who are interested in a STEAM career in our ITS, Police, Water, Parks, Special Events, Engineering and Fire Departments.

      The city of Elgin's new STEAM Summer Internship Program is an opportunity for high school juniors and seniors with a proven interest in STEM and arts fields, to help with projects that make Elgin a better place to work and live.

      STEM jobs in the city of Elgin range from working outside testing water, hands-on fixes to computers, crime analysis at our police department, prevention inspections with our fire department, assist with the care and safety of animals at the Lords Park Zoo, to assisting with restoration at Hawthorne Hills Nature Center to working in a lab testing the city’s water.


      ITS Department Learn about software and hardware used by the city. Perform hands-on fixes and preventative maintenance on computers. Assist with software upgrades and more.
      Police Department Perform statistical crime analysis and data interpretation. Assist with drone maintenance and flying, crime scene mapping, traffic crash reconstruction.
      Water Department Water sample collection and analysis, help collect data on water service line replacements, assist utility locators find water, sewer, gas and other below surface systems, assist with review of plans for water system infrastructure.
      Parks Department Work with the Hawthorne Hills Nature Center Naturalist assisting with restoration efforts, designing educational programming, and giving tours to visitors.
      Lords Park Zoo Care for, feed and ensure the safety of domesticated and wild animals in the Lords Park Zoo.
      Engineering Department Work out in the field and in the office, reviewing documents, doing research and learning all aspects of civil engineering.
      Special Events Department Assisting with special events projects that include event planning, marketing and design work.
      City Managers Office - Sustainability Collaborate with city staff and assist in community education efforts, raising awareness about sustainability-related city services. Gain valuable hands-on experience in sustainability planning and community engagement, contributing to the city's work towards a greener, more resilient future.
      City Managers Office - website development Work on enhancing the website's content and design, gaining hands-on experience in coding and web development. Learn valuable skills while contributing to the improvement of the city's online presence.
      Fire Department Assist with fire prevention planning and inspections, ride along with Battalion Chiefs and learn about emergency operations, learn about the mechanics and math of fire suppression and the science behind fire.

      Applicants must meet the following criteria:

      • be entering their junior or senior year of high school
      • reside in Elgin



      When Will I Work?

      Employment dates will be from June 4 - August 9, 2024. Hours vary with each individual working 30 hours/week. Before being hired candidates must pass a drug test.
