      BC Parks is responsible for the effective management of the natural, cultural and recreational values in the Province’s protected lands system. BC Parks delivers on three primary functions; protected area land and resource planning, administration and management; serving as the regulator for all matters pertaining to protected areas; and providing and administering recreation opportunities and associated services.

Inherent in this mandate is the requirement to maintain a balance between PPAD goals for protecting natural environments and providing outdoor recreation opportunities.

      The primary role of the Senior Park Ranger is to serve as the front line field contact with protected areas visitors and clients through direct delivery or supporting the delivery of the full range of BC Parks programs in single or multiple parks. There are a broad set of functions that may be performed by this position depending on the situational and geographical demands of the individual position location and the length of the term of employment. Depending on the term of employment, employees may undertake all or some of the tasks and functions listed in this job description over the course of a year.

      Key functions may include: undertaking natural, cultural resource and recreation services management, and monitoring actions as assigned; facility maintenance and minor reconstruction; contract/project management; planning and delivery of compliance and enforcement actions; providing information to park visitors; supervising and or coordinating staff and volunteers; identifying and addressing public and employee health and safety issues; undertaking liability and risk assessments and taking corrective action; providing input into park, resource and recreation management plans; undertaking emergency response duties in to help protect the rights, property and interests of the government in Parks, Protected Areas, Conservancies, Ecological Reserves and Recreation Areas.

      Job Requirements:

      • Undergraduate degree in natural resource management, outdoor recreation or a related field (biology, geology, resource management, recreational planning, forestry, fisheries, etc.), and one year of related experience; OR,
      • A two-year technical diploma in one of the above fields and three years’ related experience; OR,
      • Secondary School Graduation (or equivalent) and a minimum of five years’ related experience; OR,
      • An equivalent combination of education and related experience totaling five years.

      Related experience includes:

      • Recreational experience in integrated resource management, natural resource management, and preferably parks or recreation management, encompassing a broad range of activities and initiatives.
      • Experience in park systems operation, park conservation, and forestry operations.
      • Experience in outdoor recreation, recreation planning, and recreation service delivery.
      • Experience with backcountry travel, backcountry skiing, or adventure travel and tourism operations as a guide or assistant guide.
      • Natural and Cultural resource and Tourism management (Forestry, Archeology and Tourism related field work).

      Special Requirements:

      • Current and WorkSafe BC recognized Occupational First Aid Level 1, 2 or 3 Certificate.
      • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence (or equivalent from another Canadian Province; a BC Class 7L/7N, or other learner’s permit, are not considered equivalent).
      • Successful completion of Enhanced Security Screening, including fingerprint screening immediately upon successful offer.
      • Completion of BC Parks Law and Its Administration (BCIT PRKS 1010 or 0010 course). This course can be obtained through the BC Institute of Technology (BCIT). Course information can be found at: https://www.bcit.ca/study/courses/prks1010.
        • *Note: if you have already successfully completed the BCIT PRKS 3110/3120 courses, BCIT course 1010 is not required. Successful candidates will have up to 3 months from date of hire to successfully complete this course. If required, work time will be provided to complete the course and course costs will be reimbursed upon successful completion.
      • Maintains a current Firearms Possession and Acquisition Licence [PAL]
        • *Note: If required, work time will be provided to complete the course and course costs will be reimbursed upon successful completion.
      • Possesses a Pleasure Craft Operator Card or higher marine certification issued by Transport Canada
      • Successful candidates will be required to attend a Provincial training bootcamp at Manning Park in April and May.

      Preference will be given to:

      • Experience in compliance and enforcement
      • Application and interpretation of policy and legislation
      • Experience of parks and/or grounds maintenance methods and equipment.
      • Experience in cultural or natural resource management
      • Experience in Parks or ground maintenance and equipment
      • Experience of cultural and natural resource management
      • Experience of permitting and contract management
      • Experience of project management principles and processes.
      • Experience of conflict resolution relating to client issues.

      Lakelse Douglas Channel Area
      Point of Assembly: Lakelse Lake Park; #4384 Hwy. 37 South (15 km South of Terrace, BC).

      The Lakelse-Douglas Channel Area is situated on the BC coast in the vicinity of Kitimat, Terrace and the Douglas Channel. The area comprises 15 Parks, 4 Protected Areas, 2 Ecological Reserves and 23 Conservancies. In total there is over 600,000 Ha of protected areas including 5 marine hot springs and the busy front country camping at Lakelse Lake Park.

      Most of the Lakelse-Douglas Channel Area’s protected areas are accessed by use of ocean going marine patrol boats (26 ft & 34 ft) in a complex marine environment. Field trips often involve overnighting in tents, patrol cabins or sometimes onboard. BC Parks staff in this area are often required to complete vessel maintenance both at sea and at the shop. A jet boat is also utilized for access up remote rivers.
