      The Emergency Management Technician supports the British Columbia emergency management structure including planning, preparedness, response and recovery at the regional level, as well as the integration of key regional stakeholders and maintains critical linkages to local government, provincial and federal staff, First Nations, industry, volunteers and the public.

      The Emergency Management Technician assists the Regional Manager with daily operations including search and rescue, road rescue, emergency social services and dangerous goods incidents. As a Provincial Regional Emergency Operations Centre (PREOC) Command Staff member, the position may direct multi-disciplinary teams of staff, provincial ministries, and contractors during planning, preparedness, response and recovery. The position assists by maintaining the operational readiness of a PREOC, including 24/7 staff availability, and participates in Temporary Emergency Assignment Management System (TEAMS) member training and exercising.

      Job Requirements:

      • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (e.g. Business Administration, Emergency Management, Public Administration, Natural Resource Management, etc.) and two (2) years directly related experience; OR
      • Diploma in a related field (e.g. Business Administration, Emergency Management, Public Administration, Natural Resource Management, etc.) and minimum four (4) years directly related experience; OR
      • An equivalent combination of education / training / experience.
      • Related experience includes all the following:
        • Experience in the development of procedures, standards and guidelines.
        • Experience in leading a team, addressing strategic initiatives and coordinating multi-agency committees or working groups.
        • Experience dealing with natural hazards, risk assessment and emergency response.
        • Experience working with standard computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
        • Financial Administration experience.
      • In addition to candidates meeting the above education and experience, preference may also be given to applicants with experience in any of the following areas:
        • Experience working and engaging with First Nations communities and/or organizations.
        • Experience in the delivery of operational requirements and delivery of training programs.
        • Experience with emergency software.
        • Experience and training with Incident Command System.
        • BC Emergency Management Systems (BCEMS) training.


      Candidates must be able and willing to:

      • Travel occasionally.
      • Work on-call and extended hours during emergency activations and participate in operational deployments throughout the province.

      About this Position:
      Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home up to two (2) days a week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
      Flexible work options may not be available during emergency operations response periods.
      This position can be based in Saanichton or Victoria.
      This is a permanent opportunity.
