  The Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship (WLRS) is accountable for integrated land and natural resource management, including objective setting for land and marine environments, effectively managing cumulative effects, and advancing reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, environmental sustainability, and economic resiliency.

  Natural Resource Information & Digital Services (NRIDS) is the information management/information technology (IM/IT) service provider and organizational partner to the Natural Resource Ministries (NRM). As the centralized authority for all information, geospatial data, and technology across the NRM, NRIDS is leading the transformation and modernization of business practices through new and innovative technology solutions, continuous improvement projects and operational IM/IT solutions.
  
  NRIDS provides broad information management services and leadership in data custodianship by way of the creation, maintenance and publication of foundational datasets and geospatial information. NRIDS is also responsible for the full range of services to maintain and support all existing IT systems for the NRM as well as the development of new applications to deliver on government objectives. NRIDS is committed to client engagement and understanding the business needs of the NRM to identify where expert knowledge, technology and data/information solutions will help the sector deliver their programs and services more effectively.
  
  The Knowledge Management Branch (KMB) leads strategic and innovative policy, science, and knowledge management solutions to support biodiversity and sustainable management of species and ecosystems in B.C. The BC Conservation Data Centre (BC CDC) is housed in KMB and assists in the conservation of BC’s biodiversity by collecting and sharing scientific data and information about species and ecosystems in BC. The primary functions of the BC CDC are to compile a list of species and ecosystems that occur in BC, assess their conservation status, map locations, and make data and information available.
  
  The Species and Ecosystems at Risk Information Specialist is the lead provincial technical authority for corporate spatial species and ecosystems at risk information; and, as such manages its custodial activities. The position provides specialist advice to senior ministry decision makers, to program areas, and to technical and professional staff in the natural resource sector on the development, use and interpretation of CDC corporate spatial data set(s). The position maximizes the potential of GIS and related geospatial and information technologies to support the business objectives of the program and its clients.
  
  Job Requirements:

  Education and Experience

  Bachelor’s degree in a related field and three years of related experience or post-graduate degree in a related field and one year of related experience.

  Related education fields may include: Geography, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, GIS, Geomatics. Other related fields may be considered.

  Related experience must include:

  • Experience in a professional setting using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to perform geospatial analyses related to biological or ecological data. Specific examples should include working with various projections, data conversion, joining/relating tables, digitizing, working with different data types and managing data.
  • Experience delivering data products and guidance to support clients and/or professionals in the natural resource sector.
  • Experience communicating technical advice and information to a non-technical audience.

  Preference may be given to those with one or more of the following:

  • Experience programming/scripting using Python.
  • Experience programming/scripting using R.
  • Experience writing queries in SQL.
  • Experience working with relational databases such as Oracle, MS Access, PostgreSQL.
  • Experience applying data management principles, procedures, systems, and standards.
  • Experience managing projects based on project management principles.
  • Experience developing web maps and/or applications (e.g., ArcGIS Online, Survey123).
  • Experience working with Indigenous organizations and/or communities.

  About this Position:
  This is for one (1) temporary opportunity until April 30, 2025. A permanent appointment may result from this temporary appointment.
  Remote work is allowed, this position can work up to full time from their home in British Columbia subject to an approved telework agreement.
  This position can be based in any Ministry of Water, Land, and Resource Stewardship office. Some of the locations available are Victoria, Prince George, Kamloops, Vancouver, Nanaimo, Surrey, Kelowna, Chilliwack, Campbell River, Fort Nelson, Nelson, Smithers and Williams Lake.
