- Master of Science degree in engineering, resource management, environmental science or applied science in an appropriate discipline and four (4) years of work-related experience in the field of waste management, with a preference for this experience in the mining sector; OR,
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, resource management, environmental science or applied science in an appropriate discipline and six (6) years of work-related experience in the field of waste management, with a preference for this experience in the mining sector; OR,
- Technical diploma in engineering, resource management, environmental science or applied science in an appropriate discipline and eight (8) years of work-related experience in the field of waste management, with a preference for this experience in the mining sector.
- Experience applying environmental protection legislation/regulations/policy.
- Minimum of one (1) year of demonstrated supervisory experience in planning, organizing, and coordinating a professional and technical workforce.
- Valid BC Class 5 (or equivalent) Driver’s Licence.
- Experience working in the coal mining sector.
- Experience working for, or directly with, a regulatory agency responsible for waste management.
- Experience working for, or directly with, other types of environmental regulatory agencies.
- Experience with the interpretation and application of the Environmental Management Act.
Influence and engage in complex natural resource initiatives related to the mining sectorThe Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy is responsible for the protection, management and conservation of BC’s water, land, air and living resources. The Ministry’s Environmental Protection Division works to protect human and environmental health. The Division’s main goals are to improve air quality; reduce greenhouse gas emissions; improve surface and ground water quality, including drinking water sources; re-develop a provincial plan for reducing and removing toxins and waste that contaminate the land, air and water - and for responding to high-risk environmental emergencies; and, enhance environmental stewardship, shared with other partners and stakeholders.
The Senior Environmental Protection Specialist protects the environment by providing authoritative and expert technical advice to others on the Environmental Management Act and the management of industrial, municipal, agricultural, point and non-point source wastes and hazardous materials associated with complex, high-risk industrial sites and large local governments. As provincial experts in their sector or area of responsibility, the Senior EP Specialist: leads regional and area-based EP planning, developing systematic approaches, policies and regulations; is responsible for coordinating the management of authorizations at high-risk, complex and unique sites/situations in the region; and conducts source monitoring and assessment to study impacts of toxins and wastes to lead compliance, continuous improvement and effective management of waste discharges into the environment.
This particular Senior Environmental Protection Specialist position works with the Ministry’s Southeast Coal Mining Team, and will be the provincial expert for the mining sector with a current focus on coal mining.

This position can be based in a Natural Resource Sector office. The locations listed above are to assist applicants in searching for this opportunity and are not a complete list of locations.
Occasional travel to southeast BC will be required.
Depending on the successful candidate’s location, a bi-weekly isolation allowance may apply.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to five (5) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
