      POSITION SUMMARY: The Outreach Worker works to gain the trust of the community and the highest risk individuals to help prevent violence and provide linkages and robust accompaniment to prosocial alternatives, including activities, jobs, education, case management, and social services. As a team member, the Outreach Worker is responsible for reaching out to the highestrisk individuals in the community and collaborating with them to prevent violence by mediating conflicts, modeling prosocial behaviors, and engaging them in positive activities. The Outreach Worker will work 20-25 hours per week, nonexempt, under the direct supervision of the assigned Violence Prevention Coordinator.

      ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

      • Firsthand knowledge of the community and knowledge of current street conflicts required
      • Ability to work one-on-one and in groups with high-risk individuals to resolve conflicts and promote prosocial behaviors
      • Willingness to work on the street and in other unstructured situations
      • Experience with training in crisis intervention, principles in nonviolence, restorative justice practices, or traumainformed practice
      • Emotional maturity: good judgment; integrity; tolerance of differing points of view and belief; commitment to nonviolence
      • Work to intervene in circumstances in which violence is likely, including retaliation
      • Work as a member of a team, communicating all relevant information to team members and supervisors instantly
      • Strategize with outreach team and supervisor to develop an ongoing strategy to respond to conflicts and violence, noting important anniversary dates or other key events
      • Plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates violence prevention/intervention programs such as conflict resolution, gang affiliation, drug abuse, & alcohol abuse
      • Outreach to the community (individually and as a team member) to build strong relationships with youth, residents, businesses, and community groups
      • Works cooperatively with community agencies to enhance program development
      • Evaluates existing programs and make necessary changes to maintain current needs and trends
      • Willingness to work late nights and on weekends • Assists with division and department special events as requested
      • Participate in all mandatory training and undertake any training and professional development as required to ensure effective work

      NON-ESSENTIAL/MARGINAL FUNCTIONS: Assumes additional responsibilities as requested

      EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS:

      • High school diploma
      • Two years of working experience in community engagement activities
      • Two years of previous working experience with children, teens, and young adults

      KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

      • Familiarity with computers such that employee can complete required data entry tasks, communicate via email, and complete basic word processing tasks
      • Excels in communications skills while working with youth and adults
      • Working knowledge of City government preferred

      CERTIFICATES, LICENSE, REGISTRATION: Valid driver’s license required

      EQUIPMENT: Walkie-talkie, iPad
