      Job Summary

      Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) seeks a Structural Trades Specialist to join its Facilities team. The Structural Trades Specialist ensures a safe and functional campus by performing tasks associated with all of the major building trades (Carpentry, Plumbing, Electrical, HVAC and Locksmithing) in response to service requests.

      The Facilities team supports RISD’s mission by maintaining a safe and sustainable campus through planning, construction services, building operations, careful management of resources, and respectful personal interaction with the entire RISD community.       This is a full-time position with excellent benefits. This position is covered under a Collective Bargaining Agreement between Rhode Island School of Design and the Rhode Island School of Design Facilities Trades Association.

      Essential Functions

      • Performs carpentry duties, constructing and building woodwork such as counters, benches, stairs, doors, using materials and techniques that may include sheet rocking, insulating, steelwork, floor tile work, masonry and cement work, carpeting, and ceramic tile and grout work. Also, to repair articles of furniture such as cabinets, chairs, and wooden office equipment.

      • Performs patching and painting such as touch-up, puncture repair, graffiti removal etc. Prepare paint / polyurethane woodwork and wooden office equipment.

      • Performs minor plumbing repairs including but not limited to cleaning and maintaining grease traps and interceptors, replacing filters, repairing faucets and toilets, and drain cleaning.

      • Performs electrical repairs including but not limited to changing lamps, bulbs, and fixtures, testing and maintaining emergency and exit lighting, and resetting breakers.

      • Performs HVAC work including but not limited to replacing filters, adjusting temperatures, resetting units, lubricating fans/bearings, and changing belts, pumps. and related equipment.

      • Performs various locksmith duties including but not limited to door installations and repairs, and repairing/replacing closers, locks and related door hardware.

      • Drives RISD vehicle to transport materials and staff as appropriate to the job site(s), possibly outside normal business hours.

      • Interprets blueprints, work sketches, and verbal instructions in completing job assignments. Works with a variety of carpenter's hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment in construction and repair projects.

      • Repairs roofs, gutters, and sidewalls working from ladders or staging.

      Required Knowledge/Skills/Experience

      • High school or equivalent combination of education and work experience. Completion of trade school is desirable.

      • 3-5 years related work experience, including knowledge of the carpentry trade including methods, tools, and materials. OSHA 10.

      • Strong customer service orientation and ability to work and communicate effectively both independently and in a team setting with internal and external constituents. Commitment to centering inclusivity, diversity and equity in executing key responsibilities.

      • Ability to work well in a high-volume environment with rapidly changing needs and priorities.

      • Basic computer skills required, including the use of software programs such as Word, Excel, Workday, TMA systems or equivalent and associated trade specific software, as well as the willingness and ability to learn and use new technologies and continue job-related training.

      • Valid driver’s license.

      Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Experience

      • Knowledge of building codes is helpful but not required.

      Work Schedule:

      2nd Shift, 2.30pm-11pm

      40 hours per week, on-call, occasionally needed to work evenings and/or weekends. The person holding this position must be available for a 24-hour emergency call back. This position is considered essential and emergency personnel and is required to report to work regardless of conditions. Overtime required.
