These responsibilities encompass student and community development initiatives, both proactive and reactive, that directly influence the success of our residential students. They also detail administrative responsibilities, foundational to this success. Finally, they exhibit behaviors that demonstrate professionalism and a commitment to the values of the department. Community Support - Consistently greet residents and guests as they enter and leave the community. - Conduct regular, formal and informal needs assessments with residents. - Conduct periodical Hospitality Rounds throughout assigned desk shifts. - Promote hall and departmental programming - Assist in the development of community decorations such as bulletin boards, newsletters, and door decorations. - Providing assistance wtih recruitment efforts related to Admissions, tours, and open house events. - Taking pride in serving as a resource for all inquiries. - Problem solving as needed to reach desired outcomes. - Managing confidential information in a secure and sensitive manner. - Learning effective operation of any university owned equipment. Administration and Leadership - When needed, attend scheduled staff meetings on Monday nights from 9pm-11pm and monthly individual (1-on-1) meetings as scheduled by the HD. - Attend all training sessions arranged by the HD, Residence Life Coordinator (RLC), Assistant Director (AD), or other professional staff - Assist in student check-in and check-out processes, including all required administrative paperwork. - Answering phones, responding to inquiries with quality service skills, and following up with callers as necessary. - Sorting and distributing mail and packages to staff and residents per provided guidelines. - Completing all administrative functions in a thorough and efficient manner. - Assisting in the completion of and instruction of how to complete work orders. - Keep current the check-in/out and roster paperwork, maintenance work order requests, and Incident Reports (if needed). - Participate in periodic performance evaluations with the HD and/or the RLC or AD. Crisis Management - Provide assistance during student, building, and campus emergencies. SDAs are a vital part of the University’s response to urgent/emergency situations. - Familiarity with the buildings and exterior areas, ability to respond to fire alarms or other building notification systems, and see paths of egress - Provide verbal and non-verbal directions to residents when emergencies occur, and move throughout the floors of the building when elevator service is not available. - Implement and enforce, with the guidance of the professional staff, policies and procedures of the Department of Housing and Residence Life, the University of West Florida, and the State of Florida. Additional Responsibilities - Serve as an appropriate role model by following policies and procedures, accepting and completing assigned responsibilities, and encouraging participation in University Housing activities. - Maintain positive and open communication with other student staff members and supervisory staff members (Hall Directors, Residence Life Coordinators, etc.). - Other duties as assigned by supervisory staff members - (Essential)
- Physical Requirements: Occasional and/or light lifting required. Limited exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc., but none to the point of being disagreeable. May involve minor safety hazards where likely results would be cuts, bruises, etc.

Position Title (Classification Title): Student Desk Assistant- Residence Life Student Staff Member (Fall 2024/Spring 2025), Student Assistant Working Title: SDA- Residence Life Student Staff Member (Fall 2024/Spring 2025) Job Summary: The Student Desk Assistant (SDA) is a part-time student staff position (minimum of 12 hours per week and maximum of 20 hours per week) earning an hourly wage. The SDA is responsible for assisting with all residential community office related functions in an efficient, knowledgeable, courteous, and professional manner that maintains high standards of service and hospitality. The SDA is supervised directly by the Hall Director (HD) and, indirectly, by other professional staff within the Department of Housing and Residence Life.
The SDA position requires work during the daytime, evenings, and weekend hours. On an as-needed basis, SDAs may be requested to work holidays and break periods. This position works directly with the residential student population, who come from varied backgrounds, cultures, and experiences.
In this position, the student staff member will provide service through a number of ways, including but not limited to: issuing lockout keys, providing information about the community or UWF campus, answering questions, performing key audits, posting advertisements provided by HRL, interacting with Resident Assistants, and providing assistance in connecting students with resources.Department Housing Residence Life FLSA: Non-Exempt Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must be a student enrolled for credit at the University of West Florida. Position Qualifications: - Registered as a UWF student for each semester of employment. Student staff members MUST register during pre-registration/academic advising to be eligible for employment for the upcoming semester.
- Be in good academic standing with the University. This is defined as a cumulative UWF GPA of 2.5 for undergraduate students and 3.0 for graduate students during the term of employment. Grades from other universities are not calculated into the cumulative UWF GPA. SDAs failing to meet any of these academic requirements during any one semester will be placed on academic probation or terminated. SDAs who fail to meet any of these requirements for two consecutive semesters will be terminated.
- Be in good standing with the University of West Florida and the Department of Housing and Residence Life (i.e. no student conduct issues/active probation, outstanding financial obligations, etc.).
- Availability to attend residential community office trainings and monthly On-Going Training. Dates will be provided prior to the beginning of each semester. Flexibility in the applicants schedule should allow for attendance to all required trainings and meetings.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends. SDAs may be requested to work during holidays and break periods on an as needed basis.
- Effective communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work and interact with students, staff, and faculty from varied backgrounds and experiences.
-Experience proving excellent customer service, clear communication, and administrative skills.Preferred Qualifications - On-campus residential student throughout time of employment.
- Experience living on campus for at least one semester.

Terms of Employment & Compensation
All SDAs are expected to work at least 12 hours a week. Hours will vary depending on the needs of the residential community and office. Employment will begin in mid-August and end within the last week of the spring semester. Summer employment opportunities following Fall and Spring employment may be available.
SDAs are selected to work for the Department of Housing and Residence Life, not for a specific building or community. Placement into a specific location is based upon a variety of factors. The Department of Housing and Residence Life reserves the right to change a position assignment at any time, if deemed necessary for the best interest of the Department.About the company
