      The Neuroscience and Rare Disease group in Basel is responsible for the identification and validation of targets, the selection and characterization of drug candidates, as well as the scientific aspects of projects aiming at the identification of new medicines for diseases of the central nervous system. Our task is to support ongoing research projects using molecular pharmacological and chemoproteomic methods in order to understand the mode of action of novel compounds.

      The Position

      We are looking for a highly motivated intern (Master student level) to join the Neuroimmunology Section in the Neuroscience and Rare Disease (NRD) Discovery and Translation Area (DTA) at Roche. A major focus of the Neuroimmunology drug discovery team is to explore mechanisms leading to and resolving neuroinflammatory processes in order to develop novel therapies for neurodegenerative disorders. The successful candidate will work under supervision of established scientists in an industry-leading Neuroscience department with an attractive portfolio of preclinical and clinical stage projects in CNS disorders. The position will be based in Basel, Switzerland.

      As an Intern in the Neuroscience Discovery group you will:

      • Culture and characterize human primary and iPSC-derived microglia and macrophages

      • Establish and implement novel differentiation protocols for these cells

      • Evaluate cells in biochemical as well as functional assays

      • Prepare samples for unbiased Omics (transcriptomics, proteomics) approaches

      • Analyze data and present results at lab meetings

      • Perform work according to established internal safety guidelines and procedures

      • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team

      During the internship, you will:

      • Use cutting-edge technology

      • Conduct your laboratory research and work in a small team composed of 4-5 biologists


      Who you are

      Your career interests are in Neurobiology/Neuroscience and/or NeuroImmunology and you are motivated to learn new techniques to explore mechanisms underlying progression of neurodegenerative disorders.

      You are / have:

      • Biology, biochemistry or molecular biology student, about to complete or have already completed a Master’s degree program in the last 12 months.

      • An interest in pre-clinical models of neurodegeneration/neuroimmunology and glial cells

      • Solid understanding of cell biology and immunology

      • Practical experience with mammalian cell culture. Previous experience with cultivation and differentiation of iPSC-derived cells will be considered a plus

      • Experienced in molecular and biochemical assays (qRT-PCR / Western blot / ELISA)

      • Skills in imaging and flow cytometry will be considered a plus

      • Experience with data analysis tools like Prism and FlowJo will be a plus

      • A self-motivated and independent thinker with excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and the desire to work in a fast-paced, cutting-edge environment

      • Fluent in English (writing and speaking)
