      Orange Coast College (OCC) is seeking an equity-minded, classified professional as a Student Leadership Coordinator within the Student Services Wing.

      Department Specifics - About OCC's Student Life and Leadership

      The Orange Coast College Student Life & Leadership Department’s (SLLD) mission is to create opportunities for student involvement, leadership development, and campus engagement in support of OCC’s vision and mission. Engagement opportunities are offered through programmatic efforts in the Student Union, on the OCC campus, and through student clubs and organizations.

      The Student Leadership Coordinator is part of the Student Life & Leadership Department team and works closely in supporting the student government, campuswide student leadership development, involvement of students in the participatory governance process, and other campuswide initiatives. The position also works closely with and collaborates with other departments to develop and implement student workshops, student communication, civic engagement opportunities, and leadership development. An important part of this position is the collaboration with the Coast Community College District’s Board of Trustees office and the OCC Office of the President.


      Summary
      Plans, coordinates, advises and performs a variety of services supporting Associated Students’ leadership and governance activities including links to related social, cultural, and educational programs and events. Administers leadership education, service learning, and community service program experiences, working closely with students, faculty, and staff to assemble, populate, and implement services.

      Distinguishing Career Features
      The Student Leadership Coordinator serves as a technical and procedural advisor as well as trainer and facilitator to enhance students’ capabilities in student government, organizing and carrying out student activities, and support outreach and prospective student recruitment. Advancement to this level requires that incumbents in this role will demonstrate skills in outreach, conducting in-service training, and understanding procedures for organizing and conducting business, elections, and events.

      Essential Duties and Responsibilities
      Specific duties may vary among departments, divisions, and jobs. Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following types of duties, as assigned:
      • Plans, organizes, and facilitates activities and programs to develop skills in student leaders such as, but not limited to, entertainment, cultural events, ice breakers, team building, and experiences to practice learned skills.
      • Advises specific branches (i.e. Student Senate, Executive Board, Standing Committees, etc.) of the Associated Student Organization (ASO) on the process of identifying, planning, and implementing successful and well-attended educational, social, and cultural activities for students. Serves as an advisor at branch meetings of ASO as assigned and interprets college policies and standards as they relate to meetings, events, and activities.
      • Coordinates and advises on the processes required for student elections including identification of candidates, organization of balloting, marketing and promoting, counting, and verifying election results.
      • Coordinates and attends ASO and college-sponsored student activities and conferences both on- and off-campus locales. Arranges for travel to off-campus events and conferences. Facilitates evaluations for events attended.
      • Develops, coordinates, and presents leadership workshops and training sessions that address character formation, student growth, and leadership development. Plans and conducts ASO retreat activities.
      • Coordinates service-learning and volunteer experiences on campus and in the surrounding community.
      • Interprets and upholds college policies and standards pertaining to the assigned areas of responsibility (i.e. participatory governance, ASO, etc.).
      • Assists student government in developing an annual ASO budget, monitors expenditures and record keeping, and provides feedback to students on financial management.
      • Tracks assigned District and/or college budgets. Monitors and reconciles various accounts and statements, records expenses, runs and provides status updates utilizing various statistical reports; identifies and analyzes discrepancies and errors. Advises administrator and/or manager related to necessary corrections.
      • Develops and produces informational materials and publications supporting student activities. Works with student leadership to generate and follow up on ideas and the processes that result in well-executed activities.
      • Works with student governance to identify and recommend student activity policies and procedures. Advises student leaders on due process and meeting protocols.
      • Working with outside businesses and community-based organizations; identifies and develops proposals for actual experiences so that student leaders can develop skills.
      • Develops and conducts period surveys related to students’ satisfaction with activities, programs, and outcomes derived from leadership development activities and events. Researches, compiles, and analyzes data for assessing program effectiveness and change.
      • Attends conferences and workshops relating to student leadership, governance, and recruitment to generate new ideas, give students experience, and support recruitment.
      • Updates, prepares, and coordinates publication of documents relevant to the assigned area. Drafts correspondence and other documents of a complex nature. Formats documents and edits for grammar, spelling, accessibility, and accuracy. Takes notes and types various documents such as correspondence, reports, and memos.
      • May serve as advisor and chaperone for ASO, ICC, and Student Life & Leadership field trips, conferences, conventions, and all other off-campus student trips as directed or assigned by the assigned supervisor. Organizes and manages trip planning and schedules.
      • Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.
      • Required to abide by all District policies and procedures including Board Policy 3050 – Code of Professional Ethics.
      Minimum Qualifications:

      Knowledge and Skills
      • Requires an in-depth knowledge of the activities associated with providing and supporting students in an academic, counseling, and advising setting.
      • Requires a well-developed knowledge of the philosophy and practices of student learning, success, leadership development, and recruiting.
      • Requires a working knowledge of student advising, meeting facilitation, agenda creation, and parliamentary procedure.
      • Requires specific working knowledge of student governance processes.
      • Requires working knowledge of college programs, entrance requirements, and application procedures.
      • Requires a working knowledge of District policies and procedures governing student activities, governance, and conduct.
      • Requires knowledge of and skill at using personal computer-aided applications for office productivity, research, and preparation of communications materials.
      • Requires knowledge of population demographics focusing on characteristics and needs of students with diverse backgrounds.
      • Requires skill in writing professional communications, reports, and materials.
      • Requires well-developed human relations skills to convey policies, procedures, and instructions to others, to make presentations to small and large groups, contract in-service training, and to persuade students toward a course of action.
      Abilities
      • Requires the ability to perform the essential responsibilities and functions of the position.
      • Requires the ability to learn District and college policies and procedures as well as those associated with counseling, advising, student services, and leadership.
      • Requires the ability to coordinate programs and activities that require identifying outcomes and sequencing steps from design to implementation and evaluation.
      • Requires the ability to use a computer and common office productivity software, conduct internet research, enter, organize, and extract data relating to program and activity performance, and produce outcome-based reports.
      • Requires the ability to interact productively with a wide range of students of varying abilities and background, including economic, social, and cultural diversity.
      • Requires the ability to exercise a positive attitude, patience, empathy, compassion, and good judgment when dealing with others.
      Physical Abilities
      • Requires the ability to lift, bend, and squat up to 50 pounds.
      • The general physical demands, working conditions, and essential job functions associated with this classification will be kept on file with the Office of Human Resources.

      Education and Experience and demonstrated evidence of D.E.I.A. (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Access):
      • The position typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in counseling, student development, education, or business discipline. Two years of experience in a student services environment.
        • Additional progressive experience in student services along with an Associate’s degree may be accepted.

      Working Conditions
      • Work is performed indoors or outdoors where health and safety considerations are minimal, but exist from sustained digital physical movements. May require work during evening and weekend hours based on the needs of the department.

      (ON-CAMPUS - in-person position)
      This is a temporary , categorical-funded, full-time, 12-months per year classified position. The District reserves the right to extend, modify, or eliminate this position based on available funds. The normal hours of work will be Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with the flexibility to occasionally work extended hours and/or weekends, if necessary, to meet the department's needs. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee.

      Pay Philosophy:

All movement on the salary schedule will occur July 1 of each year for all classified employees.
