Student Support Specialist FLSA Status: Exempt Reports To: Principal Employment Terms: 11-Month Full-time Position (220 Contracted Days) Salary: Teacher Scale Position Summary The Student Support Specialist provides a school-based, multi-faceted framework of instructional support and behavioral intervention for middle school students at risk of dropping out or being retained. Position assists all middle school students regarding academics and behaviors, including but not limited to identifying vulnerable students; planning, implementing, and monitoring individual middle school promotion plans; and identifying and resolving barriers to promotions to the next grade. Essential Functions Identifies middle school students with a high probability of not passing to the next grade; collaborates with the feeder elementary schools to determine elementary school students with a high probability of not passing the middle grades. Assists faculty and administrators with instruction to meet the needs of identified vulnerable students. Identifies and connects area social agencies with youth at risk of not passing middle school classes and their parents/guardians. Provides written and verbal communication to parents of students at risk of not passing middle school classes. Analyzes data for individual students from sources such as, but not limited to: State Standardized Tests Local Records (i.e., attendance, behavior, teacher/family/student conferences, student success team meetings, and grade retention records) Works with students and counselors to develop an attendance and achievement plan to include the best program to meet academic goals. Assists in implementing PBIS policies, regulations, guidelines, and procedures about student behavior. Assists administration with the implementation of behavior intervention services, with emphasis on restorative practices and PBIS. Assists grade-level administrators in addressing bus referrals and maintains proper documentation. Serves as an intermediary for minor student behavior situations and assists administration on major disciplinary infractions, as needed. Work with the Opportunity (OP) Center paraprofessional to facilitate restorative practices for minor student behavior infractions. Assist teachers with behavior management strategies and implementation. Assist administration promptly communicating student behavior expectations to students, parents, teachers, other staff, and relevant stakeholders. Conducts home visits to identify students and families in need of additional support. Performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities or special projects as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thorough knowledge of school counseling, student support services, and relationship building. Experience with master schedule development. Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of school administration. Skill in using personal computers and related software packages, hardware, and peripheral equipment. Ability to communicate ideas effectively in both oral and written formats. Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, subordinates, supervisors, state officials, the School Board, and the general public. Qualifications, Education, and Experience Master’s degree in education or related field. Eligible for a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License in administration and supervision is preferred. Experience as a school-based administrator is preferred. Experience as a professional school counselor is preferred. Possess excellent oral and written communication skills. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable. Physical Requirements This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force. Work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires standing, walking, and sitting, and occasionally requires stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting. Work has standard vision requirements. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities. Work has no exposure to environmental conditions. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic). Special Requirements Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s) and/or endorsement(s) for the position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia or School Board. Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia to operate division-owned/leased motor vehicles. The incumbent’s driving record will be subject to periodic review, and must be acceptable in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board’s policy manual.
