The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan law and policy institute that seeks to improve the systems of democracy and justice in the United States. We work to hold our political institutions and laws accountable to the twin American ideals of democracy and equal justice for all. The Brennan Center’s work ranges from voting rights to campaign finance reform, from ending mass incarceration to preserving Constitutional protections in the fight against terrorism. Part think tank, part advocacy group, part cutting edge communications hub, we start with rigorous research. We craft innovative policies. And we fight for them – in Congress and the states, in the courts, and in the court of public opinion.

We are seeking interns to provide administrative and clerical support to staff in our New York office for our Communications Events team.

Responsibilities: As an intern with our Communications department, your responsibilities will include providing administrative and clerical support to our Communications Events team, including: assisting with public, private, in-person and virtual events as needed, drafting event related blurbs and social media content, enhancing scripts, conducting research, etc. Additionally, there will be opportunities to attend and observe substantive meetings, events, and conversations on program work.

In addition to administrative and reception duties, specific responsibilities for the Communications Events team include:

      • Helping produce public and private events about Brennan Center issues both virtually and in-person.

      • Note that many events will take place in the early evening, so candidates need to be available to attend events.

      • Editorial and administration jobs may include coordinating meetings, drafting scripts, brainstorming guests and moderators, drafting routine correspondence; track publisher lists for new titles in our subject areas.

      • Marketing tasks to promote events include helping with strategies and contacts for audience outreach, reaching out to co-sponsors; brainstorming, building and updating outreach lists.

      • Production duties include conducting program research, tracking and organizing event logistics.

      • Maintaining multi-media tracking lists and archive (audio, video, photos)

      • Programs have included: Ta-Nehisi Coates, author of Between the World and Me; Preet Bharara, former U.S. Attorney SDNY; Katy Tur, NBC News Correspondent; CNN’s Van Jones; Carol Anderson, author of White Rage; Dahlia Lithwick, Senior Editor and legal correspondent, Slate; Lisa Monaco, former Assistant to President Barack Obama for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism; Bill Moyers, President, Schumann Media Center.

Qualifications: The ideal candidates are independent self-starters, friendly, cheerful, energetic, punctual, resourceful, positive, detail-oriented and highly organized. Must have a sense of humor! Interns must also have excellent, research, writing, and analytical skills, as well as a passion for our issues. Experience with Windows, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word a must. Experience with Eventbrite and Google Suite are very important. Database experience is very helpful. Must be available to work early evening events and open to evolving responsibilities.

The Brennan Center is committed to advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the workplace. We continuously work with our staff to find new ways to increase diversity and to build and cultivate an inclusive and equitable work environment, where everyone can be their true self and feel a strong sense of belonging.
