Your summer will start with us on June 3rd 2024 and will be filled with meaningful work experiences, professional development, networking, opportunities to get involved in your community and most importantly, have fun!       Intern responsibilities will vary based upon your area of interest and department placement. Applying to this opportunity confirms your interest in being considered for one or more of the below departments for summer 2024:

      Chief Ethics and Compliance Office (Waltham, MA)

      The Chief Ethics and Compliance Office team provides assurance and advisory services to manage the risk of non-compliance with laws, regulations, orders, and agreements with regulatory agencies. The team administers our company’s Compliance Risk Management Framework and enables the business to achieve their objectives while maintaining compliance with applicable requirements. For the summer, you will have the opportunity to support other members of the company in their understanding and management of compliance risks through overseeing assessments, advisory services, assurance (controls testing) activities, develop and report on business compliance performance, drawing insights from trends noted in performance data, and ensure new requirements are identified, analyzed, and recorded within our requirements inventory.

      Colleague Communication & Engagement (Waltham, MA)

      Our Colleague Communication & Engagement Team helps to tell the story of how we are delivering for customers and enabling a clean energy future. The team manages internal communication channels and engages with employees to share successes that showcase the important work that the company is doing. For the summer you will be able to contribute with photography and writing for our internal company website, as well as help oversee video creation, and digital design to help the team tell their story.

      Corporate Affairs/Government Affairs (Boston, MA)

      The New England Government Affairs team manages the company's relationship with state elected officials and policymakers on Beacon Hill, Boston - helping to advance our shared goal of achieving Net Zero. As part of Corporate Affairs, this team ensures that the Company's priorities are well represented in the Legislature and policy proceedings in the Executive Branch of Massachusetts state government. For the summer, you will conduct research into legislation and executive branch processes, including legislative tracking and drafting comments for legislation and regulatory processes. You will engage in stakeholder management and assist in developing a new stakeholder matrix. You will also attend legislative hearings or public hearings for rulemaking.

      Customer Data Office (Waltham, MA)

      The Customer Data Office has 4 scope pillars: Data Product Management, Data Quality, Data Governance, and the Analytics Hub. The team designs and guides the development of broad-use customer data products for operational and analytical consumption by business teams, as part of a new integrated centralized customer data platform and analytics hub. For the summer, you will be assisting the data product team with creating reports and running analyses, working within Jira, and helping with documentation.

      Environmental (Waltham, MA)

      The Environmental team secures permits for all capital work (gas & electric, distribution, transmission, and facilities). They ensure compliance with permit conditions during construction, monitor facilities and various work locations for compliance with hazardous waste storage, and provide spill response for oil releases and emergencies. For the summer, you would be able to assist the team in reviewing environmental screening checklists for proposed gas and electric infrastructure projects, conduct field visits to construction locations to assess activities for environmental compliance requirements, perform environmental compliance reviews, amongst other opportunities that will be shared at the point of interview.

      Field Safety - New England (Braintree, MA)

      The Field Safety team provides safety support to all Gas and Electric Field Operation teams by way of field safety visits, incident investigations (internal & OSHA), safety meetings, as well as safety trends and solutions. For the summer, you will be interacting with the Field Safety, Safety Policies & Programs, and Operational teams. You will have the opportunity to conduct field visits, develop content and lead safety meetings, utilize data to identify possible trends, and participate in incident investigations. Additionally, you may work on process improvement projects. This is a development opportunity, and the successful candidate is not expected to have experience in all aspects of the role.

      National Grid Ventures (NGV) - Offshore Wind (Boston, MA)

      National Grid Ventures (NGV) is at the forefront of the energy transition. Separate from National Grid's core regulated business, this team operates across the UK, Europe, and US, developing, operating, and investing in large-scale clean energy infrastructure. The team is helping to accelerate society’s drive towards net zero while maintaining the security of supply today.

      Throughout your time in this role, you will enhance the company’s ability to develop, commercialize, and permit competitive energy projects in the U.S. Northeast to meet company energy transition objectives. You will have the opportunity to conduct competitor analysis, market/policy research, and energy market analysis to support offshore wind and transmission. Your focus would be on monitoring the competitive landscape for industry and market developments providing market development reports and contributing to broad team initiatives.

      National Grid Ventures (NGV) - Transformation (Waltham, MA)

      National Grid Ventures (NGV) is the unregulated arm of National Grid. We operate across the UK, Europe, and US, developing, operating, and investing in large-scale clean energy infrastructure. As the NGV Transformation tea, we partner with the greater NGV organization to activate our strategy through transformation. In collaboration with the wider Group Transformation Office, we share best practices and provide assurance we are transforming across the Group. This team is responsible for Strategy Activation and Delivery Confidence across NGV US' strategic transformational initiatives. For the summer, you will perform ad-hoc strategic and financial analyses as needed. You will also assist in synthesizes insights and analysis results to a compelling story and design executive deck to tell the story. You will also be able to assist with various change management and program management activities as needed.

      New England Strategic Workforce Development (Waltham, MA)

      The New England Strategic Workforce Development team is responsible for building a sustainable pipeline of diverse talent to ensure our workforce reflects the communities we serve and can build and operate a net zero system to support our goal of enabling the energy transition for all. As an intern, you will expand your knowledge of workforce development in the energy sector and in project management and gain hands on experience organizing events and engaging in outreach to organizations and individuals in the community. You’ll collaborate with the entire team and participate in department and company meetings, events, and trainings. You’ll also assist in projects such as communicating directly with high school and college students to get them excited about careers in energy, build out communication materials, and engage in research related to workforce equity.

      Policy & Regulatory Strategy (Waltham, MA)

      The Policy & Regulatory Strategy team conducts policy analysis and creates new policy in support of the company's overall strategy for our electric and gas businesses, with a strong focus on state climate and clean energy policy. This team works closely with Corporate Affairs and our Regulatory teams to provide input into ongoing policy processes externally, and to support external advocacy more broadly on our priorities. For the summer, you will be conducting research and performing qualitative and quantitative analysis on various topics, analyzing existing or proposed regulation, legislation, and other types of policy, as well as coordinating with teams across the business to identify or determine policy positions.

      Risk Office (Waltham, MA)

      The Risk Office team is responsible for the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework across our organization. They provide required policies, procedures, and processes to employees across the company. The team also provides advice and insight on the risks to our company’s success, through monitoring and reporting. Form the summer, you will be maintaining risk information in our systems of record (Archer GRC), reporting on our key risks using Power BI, working with team members on risk assessments and evaluations and attending meetings with stakeholders.

      US Strategy (Boston, MA)

      The US Strategy team supports our US gas and electric business units in facilitating the development of robust strategy positions guiding National Grid’s focus and activities over the coming decades. The team members are trusted advisors and partners across the businesses, providing market and business insights, that drive thought on the clean energy transition both inside and outside of National Grid. For the summer, you will be performing research tasks and assist in the development of analysis that underpin strategic recommendations for the business. You will also create value-driving insight by assisting in the development of and leveraging advanced quantitative models of energy systems and scenarios, financial value, and customer affordability and economics (Excel-based. Additionally, you will support the development of visual and written materials to communicate strategic recommendations or responses to executive-level questions, as well as support the engagement of US business stakeholders to develop and gain alignment on positions in support of the strategy.

      What You’ll Need

      • Availability to start on program start date, June 3, 2024 and work full-time (40 hours a week) throughout your duration of the summer
      • Registered in school as a full-time student and continuing education full-time for Fall 2024 Semester
      • Pursuing a Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree
      • Majoring in Business, Finance, Communications, Law, Photography, Public Policy, Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, or a related field
      • Accumulated 18 or more credits and be 18 years of age
      • Work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States
      • Located within a commutable distance to the identified work location for the summer
      • Some Gridtern positions will require a valid US Driver’s license. This qualification will be included in the department specific Gridtern role(s) descriptions at point of interview

      Salary Range

      $18.00 - $25.00 an hour (Undergraduate Student)

      $26.00 - $32.00 an hour (Graduate Student)

      Candidates will be assessed and provided offers based on major, degree type, and class year. Our Gridtern Program does not offer relocation, housing assistance, or public transportation reimbursement for Gridterns; however, we can provide a list of resources to utilize in making your arrangements.
