      Overview

      This summer the Lawrenceville School Office of Sustainability is continuing a field ecology internship program in land stewardship for the school’s extended property. While the core campus occupies 30 acres, the school owns 640 acres of farmland, forest, wetlands, and fields. The recently completed Land Stewardship plan outlines a management strategy to enhance wildlife habitat in wetlands, forests, and other natural areas owned by Lawrenceville. This work is being done in partnership with ecologists from the Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space (FoHVOS). Land stewardship work includes vegetation mapping, invasive species removal, rare species identification, deer herd management, and related ecosystem efforts.

      As part of this work, the office of sustainability is offering five ecological restoration internship positions for day students. This work will consist of five days working with FoHVOS ecologists conducting invasive species removal, visiting nearby restoration sites, and making a poster for the fall Academic Showcase. Interns will work together on 7/8-7/12.

      A total of 5 positions are available. Please complete the requested information in iCIMS by February 19. Important note: This program is geared towards day students.       Compensation and Duration:

      $15.13/hour. Short blog entry to be completed outside of this time.Six full weekdays between July 8 and 12. This will also include brief paid workplace training sessions prior to the start date through the School HR office.

      Responsibilities

      • Five full days, 7/8-7/12, weather permitting. Work will entail invasive species removal, restoration site visits, and making a scientific poster for the fall Academic Showcase.
      • Learning about Lyme Disease, taking preventive measures, and checking for ticks each day.
      • Commitment to writing a blog entry for the Sustainability Office webpage and contributing photos for our Instagram and Facebook pages.

      Qualifications

      • Experience with or interest in ecology and sustainability
      • Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to relate to supervisors and fellow interns.
      • Organized, thorough, and detail-oriented work style, with strong time and task management skills.
      • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
      • Good character, integrity, and adaptability.
      • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control.

      Physical Requirements:

      • Endurance, including prolonged time in sun, rain, and heat standing, bending, stooping, and stretching while conducting field research.
      • Hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and conduct field research activities.
      • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
