      PROJECT DETAILS

Interviews will be carried out on the week of 25th September 2023, applications close 5pm Friday 15th September. Please include a detailed cover letter with your application including your preference re the below options.

Option 1: Integrated pairing and roster optimization for business jet airlines

Over the summer we need someone to investigate the best way to integrate pairing and roster optimization problems in the context of business jet airline operations. Such airlines do not have a regular flight schedule, but instead operate like a taxi service. Every day there are pilots on duty. The task is to find the best roster for the pilots that meets predicted demand and minimizes costs. The tasks are to:

      • Investigate possible ways to integrate pairing and roster problems.
      • Explore how specifics of the business jet operations can be exploited algorithmically.
      • Perform test runs of the proposed approaches.

      Core Skills:

      • Final Year or Graduate+ level skills in C# or Python.
      • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
      • Knowledge of Operational Research is a bonus.

Option 2: Data analysis for cause-effect justification in Crew Planning Optimization

Optimization in the Crew Planning space involves generation of pairings and rosters for crew members. Pairings and rosters must follow certain rules while maintaining a high quality. Optimization engines automate this task but require users to set parameters to meet the rules and desired quality metrics. Small changes to these parameters may have large impact on the solution.

This project is to investigate how we can better compare solutions and guide a user to understand the cause-effect that is going on between input changes and output changes.

      The tasks are:

      • Understand the inputs and outputs for the pairing and roster problems
      • Use Python to generate solution difference reports, containing information on how two solutions differ
      • Check the difference in outputs for multiple data sets with different inputs, and perform trend analysis via Python and Business Intelligence tools (Power BI or Excel)

      Core Skills:

      • Final Year or Graduate+ level skills in C# or Python.
      • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
      • Knowledge of Operational Research is a bonus.
