      Paid Legal Internship Description

      The Delaware River Port Authority (“DRPA”) is a bi-state agency of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the State of New Jersey. It owns and operates the Benjamin Franklin, Walt Whitman, Commodore Barry, and Betsy Ross Bridges which are four major bridge crossings of the Delaware River. The Authority’s transit subsidiary, the Port Authority Transit Corporation (“PATCO”), operates a two-track rapid transit line between Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Lindenwold, New Jersey.

      Program Description

      The DRPA/PATCO is seeking to hire summer legal students at DRPA for the 2024 summer season. The hourly rate is $22 per hour. While former summer interns are welcome to apply, past employment as a summer intern does not guarantee that you will be selected for an internship this summer. Students who wish to apply for a summer internship must meet the following criteria:

      1. All assignments require a full-time commitment (40 hours) for 12 weeks.
      2. Successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation.
      3. Successful completion of a medical examination which includes a laboratory screening for substance abuse.

      Position Purpose

      To provide assistance to the General Counsel and legal staff in the preparation and organization of litigation, transactional matters and other assignments affecting the DRPA and PATCO and perform related duties as required.

      12. Ability to meet deadlines, fulfill obligations and work under time and performance pressure.
      13. Knowledge and experience in utilizing law libraries and Lexis/Nexis for research.

      Education and/or Experience

      Required:

      · Applicants must be 18 years of age, have completed at least one year of law school, and be enrolled in the upcoming Fall 2024 semester.

      · Proficiency in relevant personal computer applications such as word processing and spreadsheet applications.

      · Applicants must be a current matriculated law student at an accredited college or university and whose home residence is within the Authority’s Port District.

      · Applicants must have a written reference from an academic counselor.

      · Applicants must provide an official school transcript with the raised seal.

      Preferred:

      1. One (1) year practical experience, including a legal internship.

      Work knowledge

      1. Excellent academic credentials and experience in legal writing, including legal internship experience.
      2. Ability to coordinate with personnel engaged in the work of a modern corporate legal department.
      3. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with professional personnel, contractors, and superiors.
      4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal and problem-solving skills.

      Physical Requirements:

      The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

      While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit (80%). The employee is required to stand and walk (15%) and lift, climb, bend (5%). The employee must occasionally lift, hold, and carry objects up to 25 + pounds. Have normal day and nighttime vision, corrected or uncorrected. Have normal hearing, corrected or uncorrected. Must be able to perform all position functions. Must be able to physically operate all job-related equipment to position functions. The employee must maintain a neat and clean appearance.
