  Summer Student - Engineering Technician (5 positions)

  The Town is currently looking for Engineering Technician Summer Students to work in the Operations & Environmental Services Department. The position is responsible for assisting in the administration of the Town of Ajax infrastructure inspection program and will work closely with the Asset Management Technologist to perform inspections of municipal infrastructure assets, collect asset information, assign conditional assessment values, and identify hazards and deficiencies. As necessary, the student may update asset inventories, perform minor contract layout, assist in contract administration, assist construction inspector with payment measurements, and perform inspections as assigned.

  Qualifications/Skills

  • Candidates must be enrolled in a Civil Engineering related program on a full-time basis both before and after the summer vacation period (see proof of enrollment requirement below), or enrolled in a co-op program where the completion of civil engineering related work experience is a pre-requisite to graduation.
  • Excellent customer service and good interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to deal with the public courteously and efficiently.
  • Strong communication skills, able to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Able to provide a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check that is satisfactory to the Town.
  • Students hired to drive Town vehicles will be required to hold a valid "G" driver’s license and have a clean driving record.
  • Candidates must be physically able to perform all duties including heavy lifting, prolonged standing and walking on uneven surfaces.
  • Candidates are expected to work in all weather conditions.

  Term of Employment

  • April 28, 2025 to August 29, 2025.
  • Candidates must be available to work the entire four (4) month period.
  • Must be available to work 40 hours per week.

  Proof of Enrollment in Post Secondary Education

  The Town of Ajax will accept any of the following to verify enrollment in a college or university program:

  • Registrar’s letter confirming enrollment and academic eligibility for the next semester;
  • Letter confirming your anticipated graduation date;
  • Letter indicating that you have more credits left to complete in your current degree; or
  • Letter confirming your application to a program next term/semester at a post-secondary education establishment.

  Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check

  • Applicants are advised that a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check will be required prior to being hired into the summer student position.

  • Please note that police record checks completed by a third-party company (i.e. Certn Canada) will not be accepted.

  Documents required upon accepting the position

  • Proof of student status (see requirement above);
  • SIN card or official documentation from the CRA;
  • Void cheque or direct deposit information;
  • Copy of your driver's license;
  • Successfully completed Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (dated on or after January 1, 2025).

  Rate of Pay

  • $18.47 - $21.71 per hour (rate of pay depends on year of study) - based on a 40 hour work week
