- Directs the total mail processing operation during the weekend shift to ensure that plant operating targets and production and service standards are met or exceeded. Establishes priorities for the processing of mail during the weekend. Regularly conducts quality checks and analyzes production reports to assess efficiency of operations. Implements contingency plans when required to maintain productivity.
- Promotes and implements work place safety and health programs for their work unit. Coaches and directs Supervisors and employees on safe work practices in order to reduce accident frequency and severity; conducts inspections and investigations, and reports and follows up on accident incidences or unsafe operating conditions. Oversees the return-to-work and accommodation of employees unable to perform the full range of duties in their job, participating in case review committee meetings as required. May chair or participate as a member of the local health and safety committee.
- Directs, coaches and provides guidance and leadership to Supervisors and employees, promoting a respectful environment in the workplace. Administers human resources processes such as staffing, performance management, disability management and attendance management. Resolves staff issues, including disciplinary action if required. Consults with Labour Relations and/or union representatives on the application of the terms of the collective agreement, including the management of first level grievances. Creates learning and knowledge transfer opportunities for assigned staff.
- Communicates to Supervisors and employees new or modified policies, regulations and procedures pertaining to the processing of mail. Champions continuous improvement initiatives and works alongside Supervisors to communicate change and respond to employee concerns.
- Monitors the processing of products for all three lines of business against schedules and plans how to move the volume of mail by both anticipating volumes and considering mail receipt patterns so not to adversely impact on mail processing and collection and delivery operations for the upcoming week.
- Works with PC&R to establish optimum processing cycle times. Liaises with the plant Manager, other Superintendents and Supervisors to determine shift production capability required to meet processing objectives.
- Develops and implements work schedules to ensure efficient and effective mail processing. Adjusts work assignments and schedules to meet fluctuations in workload.
- Identifies and recommends modifications in methods and/or equipment to improve production and reduce costs. Reviews mail volume trends and considers their impact on future space and equipment requirements. Recommends acquisitions and relocation of operational equipment. Promptly responds to equipment failures, makes adjustments to meet scheduled deadlines, prepares a report and notifies the Area Production Control.
- Communicates frequently with the Superintendents on all three shifts, provides a brief ‘re-cap’ of key activities performed and discusses any anomalies that occurred during the weekend shift.
- Participates in the planning, development and achievement of annual plant objectives.
- Manages the approved budget for his/her area. Forecasts, controls and accounts for processing and labour expenditures. Prepares and submits reports highlighting expenditures to date and any associated variances. Obtains and assesses Supervisors’ estimates in their budgetary needs.
- High School diploma or provincial equivalent (GED) (Equivalent Experience may be accepted in lieu of a High School Diploma)
- Minimum 2 years’ experience as a supervisor in mail processing OR Minimum 4 years’ experience managing a team within a unionized environment
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (i.e., understand the major features of each software application)

The Superintendent is accountable for the safe and efficient management of the total mail processing operations for all three Lines of Business so that so that service commitments, safety requirements and productivity standards are met during the weekend shift. Provides guidance and leadership to Supervisors and employees and is responsible for all activities related to management of the workforce. Works with Production and Reporting (PC&R) to establish optimum processing cycle times to ensure that processing equipment is operated in accordance with approved methods and standards. Participates in the development of the annual plant operations plan, and manages the approved budget for his/her area. Is on call 24 hours per day during the weekend shift and is accountable to relieve other Superintendents on their scheduled days off.
