      Responsibilities

      Job Summary:

      The surgical technologist handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. He/she has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.

      Program Summary:

      • 6 week classroom curriculum (educational materials provided).
      • 3 months of foundational learning in the surgical setting.
      • Clinical support from educators and highly trained surgical tech preceptors.
      • Cohort of 8 apprentices.

      Inclusion criteria for internal candidates:

      • Must be willing to commit to rigourous on the job training.
      • Be able to work 40 hours a week (while in training).
      • Must not have any corrective action above a verbal warning.
      • Have a written letter of recommendation from your current leader.
      • Candidates who have been with the organization for less than a year will be considered and must be approved by senior leadership.
      • Must maintain good attendance during the program
      • Must maintain a passing grade of 75% on all quizes, tests and clinical practicums.

      Qualifications

      Required Qualifications:

      • Graduation from an accredited surgical technician vocational or technical program/school.
      • Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association.
      • One year experience in operating room as surgical technician or clinical rotations at University Hospital.

      Preferred Qualifications:

      • CST – Certified Surgical Technician
