      General Description of this Role

      Surgical Technologists (ST) are allied health professionals who assist in the preparation and care of surgical patients ranging from infancy to geriatrics under the general direction of a professional nurse. The ST possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile aseptic technique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a surgeons’ performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Candidates for this job classification must meet requirements established by the Surgical Technologist Clinical Ladder Review Board.

      Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

      Level III

      • Perform all the duties and responsibilities of Level II plus the following:
      • Provide leadership at unit level to correct safety/clinical quality deficiencies. Lead /implement changes at the unit level.
      • Assist with the teaching of newly hired technologists and student Operating Room technologists.
      • Serve as a role model to new employees and other staff members. Coaches team to anticipate resources.
      • Communicate effectively with patients, staff members and physicians.
      • Assume responsibility for self and ensures that the policies, procedures and safety practices of the Operating Room and Hospital are reinforced.
      • Use critical thinking to anticipate the needs of the surgical team and perform other duties and responsibilities as required.
      • Demonstrates advanced knowledge and practice of aseptic and surgical technique.
      • Demonstrates advanced knowledge related to OR emergency situations.
      • Assists in the development of policies, procedures and protocols at the department level
      • Develops process to improve cost containment / decrease waste in room.

      Level IV

      • Perform all the duties and responsibilities of Levels II and III plus the following:
      • Provide leadership at the CSU / Hospital/ Health system / region or national level.
      • Presents or teaches at the CSU / Hospital / Health System level.
      • Assists in the development of policies, procedures and protocols at the CSU level.
      • Assists in efforts to improve resources (ie: data collection)

      Required Qualifications at this Level

      Education:

      • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program or the successful completion of the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) certification exam.

      Experience:

      • Candidates for Level III and Level IV must meet requirements established by the Surgical Technologist Clinical Ladder Review Board.
      • Level III - Candidates for Level III and Level IV must meet requirements established by the Surgical Technologist Clinical Ladder Review Board. Three years clinical practice or relevant military experience including 1 year of full-ime (30 hrs/wk or .75 FTE) employment at DUHS.
      • Level IV - Candidates for Level III and Level IV must meet requirements established by the Surgical Technologist Clinical Ladder Review Board. Must be LCC-ST Certified. Five years surgical technology practice or relevant military experience including 2 years of full-time (30 hrs/ wk or .75 FTE) employment at DUHS.

      Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:

      • Level III- Must be eligible for certification by CAAHEP, TS-C (NCCT)
      • Level IV-Must be LCC-ST or TS-C certified

      Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

      • Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure in a stressful environment, and often without relief.
      • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of anatomy relating to the surgical procedure and the instrumentation required in order to effectively anticipate the needs of the surgeon.
      • Ability to set priorities and respond appropriately to actual and/or potential life threatening situations.
