- Partner with department leadership, workstream leads across the agency, and the Executive Climate Office to define and drive climate action plans throughout the Department.
- Develops and maintains performance measures related to the Department’s efforts to accomplish projects and goals that align with the vision.
- Develop recommendations for climate justice that maximize co-benefits for other county policy objectives, including environmental benefits, improved mobility, housing affordability, improved health outcomes, economic opportunity, emergency preparedness, and community resiliency.
- Develop a department-wide Climate/Sustainability team. Provide mentorship and serve as thought partner for workstream leads for climate focus areas throughout the Department, including those on the DES Climate/Sustainability team.
- Ensure work units are informed and empowered to make thoughtful and strategic decisions that support the Department's sustainability and climate goals through a comprehensive communications strategy.
- Help to develop budget guidance and help integrate budget proposals across divisions/departments that advance sustainability and climate goals.
- Have experience in sustainability program management.
- Have experience applying equity and social justice principles that exemplify shared values, behaviors, and practices to all aspects of their work
- Are proficient in various climate-related topics, including transportation, energy, green building, consumption and materials, forests, climate impacts and preparedness, and climate and environmental justice.
- Can effectively manage numerous complex projects and resources in a matrixed environment.
- Have proficiency in oral, written, and interpersonal communication, and adept at engaging with diverse audiences, collaborators, and staff members.
- Have the capacity to solve problems methodically with rigorous logic, research, and effective solutions.
- Are able to manage ambiguity and adept at managing change through change management principles.
- Have the courage to lead and manage while providing direct, comprehensive, and actionable feedback.
- This position is exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and not overtime-eligible. Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule, every other Thursday, comprising a 40-hour workweek, normally 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
This position is not represented by a union. - The work associated with this position will be performed or conducted through a combination of teleworking and onsite work and meetings. Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.

King County Department of Executive Services (DES) seeks a knowledgeable and collaborative leader to implement the agency's vision for tackling climate change. The Sustainability and Climate Manager leads and implements the Department of Executive Services Climate Action Program to address the climate crisis and environmental justice. In partnership with DES divisions, the Executive Climate Office, and community partners, this position will lead a matrixed team responsible for planning, directing, and implementing the climate action goals in the King County Strategic Climate Action Plan (SCAP).
The Climate and Sustainability Manager will provide strategic leadership and direction to implement and manage the DES vision of a department actively engaged in climate-supporting activities. This position will establish internal coalitions across and within divisions to address the critical issues related to operational and countywide efforts, including fleet electrification, facility decarbonization, green and equitable buildings, reducing vehicle miles traveled, preparing for climate change, green jobs and new construction, and climate justice. The Sustainability and Climate Manager will be a key face and voice for the Department on climate action. They will serve as thought leaders on connecting technical climate information, community priorities, and decision-making to advance DES’s sustainability objectives. The position reports to the DES Director.
