  Primary Purpose:

  Direct an instrument-specific elementary music program incorporating Suzuki’s philosophy and teaching techniques. Collaborate with secondary ensemble directors and overall program of instrumental music for the district. Provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular music activities and ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), and district requirements. Plan activities to achieve district, region, and state recognition. Provide for physical and instructional needs of Suzuki students. Applications will be accepted for instruction in violin, viola, cello, bass, or flute.

  Qualifications:

  Education/Certification:

  Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university

  Registered Suzuki training with the Suzuki Association of the Americas (minimum training through Book 4 preferred)

  Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Commitment to the Suzuki philosophy
  • Knowledge of Suzuki literature and repertoire
  • Knowledge of the UIL prescribed music list and standard method books
  • Demonstrated excellent musicianship and artistry as a teacher/performer
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of music technology (MIDI)
  • Ability to implement policy and procedures and interpret data
  • Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated evidence of responsibility, competence, enthusiasm, and creativity
  • Ability to meet punctuality and attendance expectations
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to problem solve with a detail oriented, logical, and methodological approach

  Experience:

  Three to five years teaching or private teaching experience

  Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Direct an active studio of Suzuki learners and families. Establish, maintain, and monitor performance requirements and expectations.

  2. Provide for and coordinate Suzuki strings participation at extracurricular events, including (but not limited to) campus concerts, school promotional programs, cluster concerts, community activities, TMEA activities, and other events as directed by your campus principal and/or Fine Arts Director.

  3. Comply with local, state, and federal laws, State Board of Education rules, UIL and TMEA rules, and PISD board policy.

  4. Coordinate any Suzuki Strings club activities and comply with board policy regarding booster rules and regulations.

  5. Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responds to student needs.

  6. Recommend policies to improve the program and collaborate with fellow orchestra staff in the development and implementation plans for the secondary music program. Show written evidence of preparation as required.

  7. Execute your assigned regular (daily) teaching schedule of classes and any travel required by your unique teaching assignment at one or various campuses.

  8. Coordinate recruiting activities to maintain consistent and growing enrollments and meet district fine arts goals in the secondary ensemble programs.

  9. Attend cluster/feeder pattern meetings with all secondary ensemble directors. Communicate about and accommodate the needs of feeder programs.

  10. Attend all UIL and TMEA region meetings as a representative of your campus to vote and voice concern or advocacy for sites, dates, and processes of future contests and meetings.

  11. Compile and monitor program budgets and cost estimates in collaboration with the Fine Arts Director based on documented program needs. Ensure that programs are cost effective and funds are managed wisely.

  12. Coordinate fundraising activities for the development of additional Suzuki Strings activities, festivals, and field trips. Ensure that all fundraising activities are district and vendor approved.

  13. Help oversee the process of cleaning, repairing, inventorying, and storing all Suzuki equipment.

  Instruction

  14. Teach private and group lessons.

  15. Develop and implement plans for instrumental music program and show written evidence of preparation as required.

  16. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.

  17. Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.

  18. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned through the district curriculum and TEKS in music.

  19. Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.

  20. Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

  Student Management

  21. Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and campus student handbook.

  22. Arrange transportation, lodging, and meals for any local or out-of-town trips.

  23. Accompany and supervise students on out-of-town trips.

  24. Assist with student supervision, behavior management, and overall guidance and development of citizenship.

  25. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

  Communication

  26. Establish and maintain open and professional communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, administrators, and teachers.

  27. Maintain professional relationship with campus and feeder directors, colleagues, students, parents, and community members.

  Professional Growth and Development

  28. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills which will be beneficial to music education, orchestral music, and Suzuki instruction.

  29. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

  30. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

  Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

  Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent district and occasional statewide travel; prolonged and irregular hours; outdoor and indoor work; exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather.
