      The City of Davis provides swim lessons to participants of all ages and abilities in a safe and exciting aquatic experience. The Swim Instructor position is responsible for providing safe swim instruction, demonstration of proper holds and support, ability to teach and encourage participants of all ages and abilities and foster an enjoyable experience in the water. Swim instruction may take place at either Manor Pool or Arroyo Pool.

      Hourly wage: SWIM INSTRUCTOR (CSS I) $15.76-$16.56 per hour

      Temporary Part Time, No benefits. Applicants will be screened according to experience relevant to this position. Those most qualified will be invited to an individual or small group interview.

      Training Dates:
      Various training days will be scheduled throughout preseason and during the summer, including Swim Instructor specific trainings and all staff trainings. Mandatory staff trainings are held the weekend of May 13 and 14 and the week of June 12 – June 16. All Staff and Swim Instructor specific training days will be scheduled every other Friday morning.
      • Week-long spring swim lessons are scheduled from May 22 – June 16 (instructors must be available from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. for three of the four spring weeks).
      • Two-week summer swim lessons are scheduled from June 19 – August 18 (instructors must be available from 4:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. and/or 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Monday – Thursday)
      • Weekend swim lessons are scheduled from June 24 – August 20 (instructors must be available from 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.)
      Responsibilities:
      • Teach group and private swim lessons to all ages and ability levels
      • Know and understand each swimming skill level and the skills that are taught
      • Create a fun and inviting learning environment to ensure a positive experience for participants
      • Complete progress reports
      • Participate in training program
      • Work effectively with swim aides and other swim instructors
      • Communicates with supervisory program staff regarding participant behavior, injuries, and other relevant matters
      • Attends staff meetings and trainings as assigned
      • Assures that all equipment and facilities are safely and properly prepared and maintained
      • Keeps work environments clean and organized
      • Perform other duties as assigned
      Minimum Qualifications:
      • Must be 15 years of age or older (or 14 if applicant has completed the Jr. Swim Instructor Program)
      • Must be comfortable in the water. A good swimmer with competitive swimming background is preferred
      • Experience teaching or working with children (examples include but are not limited to: babysitting, academic/athletic tutoring, camp counselor, youth volunteer, classroom assistant).
      Physical/Sensory Requirements:
      Staff should be prepared to work outdoors, in various environmental conditions each week. Staff are required to wear a mask/face covering and should be prepared to demonstrate physical social distancing standards in line with current guidelines and requirements to keep all staff and participants safe. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. This is an active position requiring the ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk frequently, lift and/or move objects from 20 lbs. to over 100 lbs.; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; verbal and hearing skills to effectively communicate with children and other staff; visual acuity to oversee projects, and make observations. Work is done both indoors and out, with exposure to heat, often over 100 degrees, sun, noise, dust, smoke and pollens. Potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens when rendering first aid. Must be able to complete additional trainings, including but not limited to: Concussion Training, Blood Borne Pathogens, Mandated Reporter, Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Heat Illness, COVID-19 Safety, Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination.
