      The Opportunity

      Join the Materials Center of Excellence (MCOE) team, as a system engineer with a background in electrical engineering leading and assisting engineering efforts to evaluate new product ideas, new materials, new components and/or new processes that will be integral for the success of the next big product ideas for Applied Materials Silicon Product Group.

      You will be responsible for the design and integration of complex electromechanical assembly into product including system design, performance tradeoffs on system integration challenges. This is a highly visible role within the company with an emphasis on productization and execution from concept to volume production with end-to-end responsibility. The best candidate will be working side by side with engineering, productivity, supply chain, and operations to drive innovative material engineering solutions that bring value to our customers in device performance, yield, and cost of ownership.

      Responsibilities: What will you do

      • Design or modify engineering assemblies, layouts, schematics and/or detailed drawings/specifications of difficult scope
      • Support fundamental research, advanced development, as well as practical design and assessment efforts of complex systems using nonlinear, multi-physics analysis. Explore a range of complex electromagnetic behavior in ceramics, metal, and polymer composite assembly. Suggest best approaches to co-optimize electrical and thermal performance of complex electromechanical products
      • Use static and transient models to create/develop methods to predict field failure models. Build simulation models by using verification, calibration, and validation techniques and best practices leading to high-quality results.
      • Create solutions to manage the wafer bow with ceramic pedestals and chucks. Lead and/or assist in optimizing controls for new and existing ceramic and chucks.
      • Technically lead and/or execute engineering projects, including development of key suppliers
      • Perform and/or oversea wide range of electrical characterization of materials not limited to dielectric loss tangent, capacitance, impedance spectroscopy, deep level transient spectroscopy, etc
      • Develop metrology hardware (and may develop software) to enable automated measurement of key performance metrics. Implement and/or enhance system diagnostics and calibrations. Validate through testing.
      • Support system engineering projects that have a substantial mix of electrical, mechanical, physics, algorithms, and software design, and understand the underlying system implications
      • Coordinate a wide variety of materials, samples, testing, assessing, reporting, etc. simultaneously across multiple technologies, programs, partners, suppliers, and customers
      • Prepare summary reports for internal and external audiences, present findings, data, and conclusions to technical experts
      • Drive the exploration, validation, and integration of technologies, materials, analysis methods, and tools to advance and expand team capabilities. Maintains relationships with outside customers of innovation, Universities, Consortia. Participates in technological customer engagements
      • Hands on experience with designing, assembling, calibrating, and using complex opto-mechanical instrumentation or systems that incorporate light sources, optical sensors, lenses, filters, etc.

      Qualifications

      • Thorough knowledge of electrical engineering analysis and design with proficiency in solving engineering problems using analytical techniques and engineering knowledge employing concepts of charge transport in materials, solid state physics, radio frequency, transmission line.
      • Solid background in applied electrical and computational techniques to simulate 3D/2D electromagnetics.
      • Extensive experience in modeling and various simulation tools (Ansys HFSS, Maxwell, ADS, COMSOL, RSOFT, MEEP). Preference will be given to candidate with multi-physics simulations experience.
      • Proficiency in data analysis software like MATLAB, Python, Excel, or equivalent
      • Understand control technology and capable of developing and implementing controls architecture. Preference will be giving to candidate with practical experience in sensing (eg capacitive, proximity, etc) for extreme temperatures
      • Hands on experience with designing, assembling, calibrating, and using complex opto-mechanical instrumentation or systems that incorporate light sources, optical sensors, lenses, filters, etc
      • CAD drawing tools not limited to Siemens Nx Unigraphics, Inventor, AutoCAD, etc.
      • Modeling of electrical constrains for better design and material optimization. Assess the technical trade-offs compared to cost trade-offs for material solutions
      • Working knowledge of PCB technology, connectors, cables, semiconductor packaging materials, and associated material and processes interactions
      • Working knowledge of materials & components used in semiconductor wafer manufacturing equipment, materials characterization methods, and failure analysis of materials/system

      Education & Experience:

      • MS with 6+ years of experience or PhD in Electrical Engineering with 4+ years of experience in electromagnetics, controls & sensing or charge transport in materials
      • Research project or industry experience in design characterization and validation of sensing systems that includes theory of operation, signal processing, fabrication, packaging, and design trade – offs
      • Demonstrated comfort managing fast-paced innovation utilizing external services, contractors, and specialists in an efficient, cost-effective manner
      • Systems thinker with depth and breadth of expertise in an area.

      Preferred Qualifications

      • Experience with design of and device/system manufacturing involving active piezo, anisotropic, non-linear materials and active devices (Eg MEMS) is preferred
      • Working knowledge of analog/digital circuitry and power controls
      • Experience with solid mechanics and thermodynamics is preferred
      • Knowledge of computational materials discovery and screening is valuable but not essential
      • Image processing and software automation experience a plus.
      • Experience with supporting manufacturing and service organizations through training, documentation (procedures, OMS, BKMs, etc.), and troubleshooting.
      • Experience working with ceramic or composite fabrication techniques such as milling, casting, sintering in vacuum furnaces, hot-presses, autoclaves

      U.S. Salary Range:

      $140,000.00 - $192,500.00

      The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on a number of factors including location and level and will vary depending on confirmed job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for other forms of compensation such as participation in a bonus and a stock award program, as applicable.
