At Maxar Space, our products are vast: from our World View Legion (WVL) platform for earth observation, to the Power and Propulsion Element (PPE) supporting NASA’s Artemis Program return to the Moon, to our highly reliable 1300/Legion class platform for communications applications. Candidates local to the Palo Alto area and who can support a hybrid work model are preferred.

We are now also designing the next generation of earth imaging satellites and proliferated LEO constellations. Maxar is currently seeking an experienced Software Systems Engineer to be an agile product owner for Maxar’s pLEO Augustus program. Expertise is required in software design, and software Agile development processes.

As a Software Systems Engineering Product Owner role, you will apply your systems engineering and agile expertise to a complex pLEO program to ensure software is developed in compliance with program requirements and consistent with the intended mission CONOPS. You will lead the agile engineering team by decomposing requirements to software elements and developing use cases that describe the behavioral model of the software architecture. Your product owner role requires prioritizing the work effort of the Agile teams, overseeing implementation, driving verification plans and approving test results. As the software systems product owner, your role includes coordination and collaboration with customers, other stake holders, and engineering functions to ensure alignment with contractually required product deliveries and documentation. We are currently seeking candidates with broad systems engineering background in satellite missions, requirements decomposition, verification, and a strong foundation in software engineering.

Responsibilities:

• Craft and manage the team roadmap for agile execution of the program
• Establish team priorities, and drive execution of an agile team
• Decompose mission CONOPS and system-level requirements into use cases, functions, and software element requirements that meet mission intent
• Establish verification criteria and plans consistent with system level verification plans
• Guide the agile software team in the design, development, and verification of the software solution in accordance with the Integrated Master Schedule (IMS)
• Manage and maintain functional block diagrams & interface diagrams
• Ensure epic acceptance criteria aligns with mission CONOPS and fulfills verification criteria
• Track and measure team progress with agile metrics reporting and successfully mitigate schedule delays
• Manage technical dependencies on customer, systems, subsystems and coordinate collaboration across individuals and other teams as appropriate
• Partner with engineering leads to capture & manage technical risks including contributor & stakeholder risk management
• Coordinate downstream internal customer’s dependencies on Software
• Manage technical subcontractor(s) or coordinate closely with leads to manage, as appropriate
• Interface appropriately with PMO, Systems Engineer, Master Scheduler, and Customer
• Recognize and manage scope creep on an agile program – effectively differentiating between what must be accomplished and what is nice to have
• Foster and grow customer relationships
• Contribute to and participate in Gate Reviews
• Author and deliver systems and software program deliverable documentation

Minimum Requirements:

• Must be a U.S. citizen
• Bachelor's degree Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, related field (4 years of equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of a degree)
• Minimum of 8 years of professionally related experience
• Minimum of 6 (subset of total experience) years of technical management and leadership overseeing complex development efforts (ie: aerospace, defense systems).
• Experience with industry best practices in Software Engineering and/or Systems Engineering
• Systems Engineering experience across multiple interacting hardware and software subsystems
• Excellent written, verbal, presentation, and executive communication skills
• Strong familiarity of Agile execution and tools (e.g., Jira or equivalent)
• Experience on a large agile software development program
• Experience with spacecraft avionics, including command, data handling, and telemetry

Preferred Qualifications:

• In-depth knowledge of one or more satellite subsystem (e.g., software, guidance & navigation, command/data handling, propulsion, mechanical, power, RF/Communications)
• 15 or more years of professionally related experience
• SAFe PO/PM certification
• Agile certification(s) such as Leading SAFe, SAFe Practitioner, SAFe for Teams, etc.
• Familiarity with C/C++ with the ability to interpret code intent
• Experience with a requirements management tool(s) such as DOORS, Jama, or Rhapsody
• Experience with hardware emulation and/or virtual machines
• Contract Data Requirements List (CDRL) ownership experience, including compliance with DoD and/or NASA requirements
• MS degree or PhD in a special field of Engineering or Science
• Experience with NASA, DoD or FAA Software and/or Systems Engineering standards
• Experience with software development standards and development methodologies (e.g., NASA NPR 7150.2, MISRA/AUTOSAR)
• Familiarity with the NASA Core Flight System (cFS) architecture
• Experience with embedded flight code design
• Extensive practical and theoretical experience in software modeling, simulation, system architectures
• Test Driven Development and/or Behavior Driven Development expertise

Our salary ranges are market-driven and set to allow for flexibility. Individual pay will be competitive based on a candidate’s unique set of knowledge, skills, and geographic diversity, with earnings potential commensurate with experience. The range for this position is:

$134,000.00 - $223,000.00 annually.

Additionally, this position is incentive eligible with a target based on contribution, company performance, and/or individual results achieved; the specific incentive plan and target amount will be determined based on the role and breadth of contributions.
