!*!The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), a Certified Best Place for Working Parents, is seeking an Tax Collections Accounts Examiner I-III to join the Tax Collections Department located at 101 E 15th Street, in Austin, Texas. Some work may done from home once initial training is concluded, so the availability of Internet access and a PC or laptop at applicant's home is a plus.

The Tax Collections Accounts Examiner performs entry level to moderately complex (journey-level) accounts examination work in the Collections and Civil Actions Department, Administrative Actions Unit. Work involves examining financial accounting records and collecting taxes, fees, or penalties. May participate in cross-training with other staff and units. Works under close to general supervision, with minimal to limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
GENERAL DUTIES:
- Examines Unemployment Insurance Tax records of employers to secure collection of past-due taxes and related amounts.
- Reviews employer Tax records and other applicable databases to verify delinquency and employer identity before taking action.
- May take any of the following actions to collect past-due amounts: issue Default (past-due) Notices, file liens and document recording data, negotiate payment plans, issue bank freezes/levies, place vendor holds with Comptroller and other enforcement actions.
- Communicates with employers and their representatives to discuss employer delinquency and and resolution of that debt.
- Responds to telephone calls, electronic mail, and letters from employers or their representatives.
- Makes daily runs to adjoining TWC building (Annex) to deliver remittances and retrieve print jobs.
- Is able to adapt to a workload that may change daily based on the needs of the unit.
- May testify at formal or informal hearings or before courts of jurisdiction on behalf of the state in relation to collection action taken.
- Performs other duties as needed.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong analytical skills needed to review all aspects of an account and then take appropriate collection action.
- One to two years of experience in debt collection.
- One to two years of experience with Microsoft (MS) Windows based programs, including MS Outlook, MS Word, and spreadsheet applications.
- One to two years of experience with Texas Workforce Tax system.
- Knowledge of Internet-based search tools (skip tracing).
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to organize and prioritize a workload with multiple tasks and deadlines.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Accounts Examiner I: Successful completion of 30 semester hours of accredited college work, which included at least 6 semester hours of accounting, mathematics, business administration, or related courses.
Accounts Examiner II: Successful completion of 60 semester hours of accredited college work, which included at least 9 semester hours of accounting, mathematics, business administration or related courses.
Accounts Examiner III: Successful completion of 90 semester hours of accredited college work, which included at least 12 semester hours of accounting, mathematics, business administration, or related courses.
Substitution for All Levels: One year of full-time qualifying experience in maintaining accounting records or performing auditing work may be substituted for each year (30 semester hours) of the required education
Duty involves up to 10% travel within the state of Texas and the ability to lift 10 pounds. This is a Security Sensitive position. Criminal background checks will be conducted. A writing test to assess grammar and related skills will be administered at interview. Work schedule will be Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Initial work until training is completed will be in the TWC offices at 101 E 1th Street, Austin TX. Work at home 3-4 days a week may be an option based on successful training. Due to the sensitive nature of the data to which this position will have access, an additional federal background check will be conducted before final offer of employment is made.
