- Paramount that this person has a good attitude and welcomes students, faculty, and staff into the laboratory areas, and is passionate about helping people learn to use the equipment and give technical advice on their projects whether it's from research or teaching aspects.
- Places equipment in laboratory areas to accommodate over 2,000 students in the ME program. Keeps social distancing in mind. Arranges team tables, workbenches, project totes in classrooms and laboratories.
- Contacts FP&M or vendors to repair equipment.
- Reviews instruction manuals for each piece of equipment and become familiar with the preventive maintenance schedules and coordinates student techs to perform daily cleanings and maintenance.
- Equipment includes but not limited to: table saw, miter saw, vertical band saws for wood and metal, drill press, router, TIG welder, MIG welder, plasma cutter, lathe, manual mill, CNC machine, break, shear, iron worker, pipe bender, press, horizontal band saw, hand tools, power tools, belt/disc sander, scroll saw, metal 3D printer, laser cutter, plastic 3D printers, 3D hand scanner, power supplies and function generators.
- Constantly evaluating options for continuous improvement in the laboratory areas including safety training requirements, equipment usage, equipment layout, and student flow through and when they need additional technical expertise.
- Continuously revising lab manuals and website to keep them up to date when adding new equipment or removing unused equipment so that all safety protocols are straightforward and easily obtained.
- Works closely with EH&S to provide students, faculty, and staff with clear and precise safety requirements.
- Works closely with Chair of Development Committee (CDC) to provide expertise about laboratory safety protocol, safe equipment use, and scheduling equipment training and project builds.
- Purchases tooling and supplies such as drill bits, endmills, inserts, dies, plastic reels, metal powders etc. as needed to support laboratory activity.
- Works with non-departmental faculty, staff and students to support student club members who need use of ME equipment and facilities.
- It is imperative the TLS has a well-trained team of student technicians to help support the labs. Due to the administrative responsibilities of the TLS (communicating through email, safety talks, ordering project materials) they cannot be in the labs at all times. That is why the TLS has student technicians working during scheduled lab sections at a minimum.

Experience with manual and Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) milling, lathe work, welding, woodworking equipment, 3D printers, laser cutting, power supplies, function generators
Experience conducting training in either a classroom or professional environment
Working knowledge of Computer-aided design (CAD) and drafting (SolidWorks preferred)Job Description:
Mechanical Engineering is seeking qualified candidates for a Teaching Laboratory Specialist II. This person will provide technical and instructional support for core mechanical engineering department. Prepare laboratory instruction and safety enforcement. Instruct and train faculty, staff, teaching assistance and students on machinery and manufacturing equipment.
Coordinates space and monitors the use of teaching labs.
Maintains and repairs equipment.
Directs the purchase, service, and repair of equipment and machinery.
Designs and tests laboratory protocols and revises as necessary.
Prepares and revises lab manuals.
Develops lab materials for instruction.
Manages budgetary needs.
Enforces safety standards in labs through training and written materials. Schedules and evaluates staff, graduate assistants, and student workers.
This position will be hired as a Teaching Laboratory Specialist II profile which requires a Bachelor's degree and 2 years of related experience. The pay grade for this position is a PS807.
