      Overview

      The Team Leader plays an essential role in supervising and training our Animal Care Technicians. They will perform routine and specialized duties as well as assist in operational planning and directing the work of the Technicians. Performs and coordinates activities involved in all aspects of the animal care program as relates to the area of assignment in strict compliance with SOPs, USDA, CDC and other appropriate regulatory agencies Collaborates cross-functionally and interacts closely with animal care/study technicians, veterinarians, and management to achieve desired outcomes.

      Responsibilities

      • Performs daily husbandry activities (feed, water, enrichment etc.) according to animal welfare standards and SOP’s.
      • Handles and restrains animals proficiently and solicitously. Uses positive reinforcement techniques for routine animal handling tasks.
      • Effectively socializes animals (group or pair housing) according to animal welfare requirements/behavioural assessments and according to requirements in area of assignment.
      • Performs daily cleaning and sanitization practices to exemplary standard and maintains animal rooms, facilities, and equipment in compliance with regulatory requirements and SOP’s.
      • Performs technical tasks related to animal care in an operations/production environment; e.g. blood collection, injections, oral dosing, dosage calculation, controlled drug management and administration, post sedation monitoring, tattoo application.
      • Provides training and guidance to animal care associates in the department, and performs to exemplary standard.
      • Collects data - manually or by appropriate computer software - and maintains well documented records according to regulatory requirements and SOP’s.
      • Ensures departmental documentation/data is accurate through review, follow-up and correction of errors on a regular basis.
      • Identifies procedural and process non-compliances, and proposes solutions for process compliance to effect process improvement.
      • Effectively applies knowledge of regulatory requirements, guidelines and SOP’s.
      • Supports operational efficiency through effective use of animal tracking/inventory system – pulls reports and performs queries.
      • May develop, maintain, and review SOPs as needed, and ensure training to and understanding of procedures as relates to department.
      • Works largely independently and on non-routine procedures as assigned.
      • Assists in leading teams and departmental initiatives.
      • Promotes and ensures the importance of health and safety procedures are followed by all personnel.
      • Performs other related duties as needed.

      Qualifications

      • 2-4 years of NHP husbandry and handling experience required
      • Excellent communication skills
      • Basic Computer skills (Microsoft Office, Microsoft Outlook, Animal Records System, etc.)
      • Knowledge of animal welfare and safety regulations as relates to area of assignment e.g. DEA, OSHA, CDC, OLAW, USDA, AAALAC
      • Technically proficient in all manner of colony health activities to include health observations, handling, restraint, treatment administration etc.
      • Fully understands the concepts and importance of colony inventory management as relates to the animal care and use program as well as the business/client requirements.
      • Demonstrates exemplary performance and procedural compliance.

      Preferred Skills and Abilities:

      • Experience leading and giving directions
      • Experience mentoring or coaching others
      • Multilingual desirable
      • ALAT certification preferred

      *This position could be offered at different levels for candidates who qualify with a combination of advanced levels of education and/or years of experience. The salary range will adjust along with the level of the role to match the person’s relevant experience and/or education level.
