Salary Level HEW 4 + 17% Superannuation and Flexible Working Arrangements
Based at the Bundoora campus, but may be required to work and/or be based at other campuses of the University
Demonstrated experience with a variety of laboratory animal species and knowledge of rodent breeding in a research environment or equivalent with experience in conventional, PC1 and PC2 laboratory areas.
Demonstrated understanding and ability to comply with current legislation, regulatory bodies, codes and standards relating to the ethical use and care of live animals for scientific research purposes.
Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining laboratory-based instruments and equipment relevant to animal research.
Proven track record of building strong relationships with a diverse range of personalities across multiple levels.
Willingness to learn and demonstrate current RMIT OH&S policies and procedures.
Strong oral and written communication skills, along with excellent interpersonal abilities, enabling effective collaboration in cross-functional teams and with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Demonstrated experience and understanding of working in accordance with RMIT value statements or similar frameworks in other organisations.

About The Position
The Technical Officer – Animal Technician reports to the Technical Coordinator and is responsible for providing technical support to users of the laboratories and research workspaces. This includes the daily care, husbandry, and health monitoring of animals, as well as undertaking tasks related to the maintenance and breeding of laboratory animals in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and the Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes (The Code).The role is central to ensuring high standards of animal welfare and requires accurate and timely record-keeping. The Animal Technician plays a key part in supporting the RMIT Research Animal Facilities (RAF) and the diverse research groups that rely on its services.
Responsibilities may vary depending on operational needs, including changes in the type and number of animals housed and the nature of current research activities. Under the direction of the Technical Coordinator, the Animal Technician will also assist with general laboratory housekeeping and contribute to the implementation and promotion of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards and best practices.
