GKN’s Global Technology Centre (GTC) in Filton, Bristol is a £32m state of the art technology research and manufacturing process development facility which is a hub for world-class innovative technology for the next generation of fuel-efficient aircraft. It includes a collaborative space for research and development with universities, the UK’s CATAPULT network and GKN Aerospace’s UK supply chain, to help strengthen aerospace technology and support the UK’s Industrial strategy

      The Technology Project Manager will be based at our GTC site in Bristol, this is a newly created position for our New Defence Aerostructures Development programme. The UK MOD aims to remain at the leading edge of Combat Air Systems development to protect its people, project influence and promote prosperity and their Combat Air Strategy defines how the RAF seeks to create operational advantage to enable the UK to achieve its military and strategic objectives. In 2018, UK Defence Industries put in place an ambitious programme to develop next generation air combat technology as part of the UK’s Future Combat Air System (FCAS) that will includes a 6th generation crewed platform (Project Tempest) complemented by un-crewed platforms and other effectors.

      GKN is already a key partner in Project Tempest and now intends to expand its position in the FCAS “family of systems” by developing aerostructure products for un-crewed Autonomous Collaborative Platforms (ACPs) with the aim to deliver increased multi-role combat capability in an accelerated timeframe, with high production rate capability, whilst also meeting stringent affordability challenges. GKN will be responsible for designing, manufacturing and assembling key components as part of an accelerated technology development programme that will include a number of flying demonstrators.

      The Technology Project Manager will be responsible for the execution of the development project including technology assessment and concept development through product and process development and ultimately into demonstrator build and testing. The role will lead the Integrated Project Team and ensure the team achieve the technical and programme requirements within agreed budgets and schedules. The focus of the role will be on establishing the New Product Introduction (NPI) of a range of aerostructure products for design and manufacture in GKN production facilities. This position will require strong development project management capabilities and the talent to work with a multi-disciplinary Integrated Product Team (IPT) most of which will have a technical/engineering background. You’ll lead the Project Support Officer and the project will operate from GKN facilities in Bristol and the Isle of Wight. There is the requirement to be flexible with travel (within in the UK) when required to our site in Isle of Wight and customers visits. We offer hybrid working the opportunity to work from home up to two days per week dependent on the needs of the business.

      Job Responsibilities

      • Supports the execution of the programme (including change control and overall scope) to comply with all the business case and contractual requirements for the project
      • Collaboration with Engineering and Technology teams on structural trade studies for potential introduction/integration into the project
      • Responsible for continuously monitoring the performance of the Project, managing off-track items and for reporting progress
      • Close interface with GKN Aerospace manufacturing site leadership team to ensure alignment and priority
      • Develop Programme Plans including cost improvement, pricing initiatives, enable Zero Defects Manufacturing, redesign initiatives, gaining agreement with relevant stakeholders
      • Provides input to Make/Move/Buy decisions and strategic procurement decisions.
      • Act as the voice of the customer and leads customer engagement with key stakeholders
      • Support Senior and Executive business line staff (Programme Director to Senior Vice President) in defining the vision, strategy, budget for the project to optimize future cash flow, profitability and growth
      • Adheres to all programme management standards and policies in accordance with the GKN Aerospace Programme Management framework and contribute to process development.
      • Actively executes Risk and Opportunity Management to control and mitigate exposure to Program/Financial/Technical risk maximize opportunities
      • Supports any associated product proposal process and Life Cycle Gate review process
      • Responsible for planning and performance of Life Cycle Gates, including preceding Reviews.
      • Responsible for ensuring Engineering and Operational demand is updated and initiating demand management for all Purchase Orders under the Programme

      • Experience in commercial, engineering or operations within the manufacturing industry.
      • Financial acumen and ability to manage budgets

      Desirable:

      • Experience in commercial, engineering or operations within the Aerospace industry.
      • Either completed or registered for acknowledged Programme Management Certification

      The position requires UK National Security Vetting (UKNSV) Security clearance (SC) due to the nature and responsibilities of the work carried out. In order for us to obtain an SC you usually need to have been resident in the UK for a minimum of 5 years to current date (but we do assess each case individually).
