      Responsibilities

      Under the supervision of an Assistant Director or the Program Director, the Counselor provides support and assistance to clients at one of the Progress programs, housed in multi-level facilities. The primary responsibility is advocating for and responding to the treatment and rehabilitation needs of clients. Specific functions include:

      • Conduct intake interviews with prospective clients.
      • Orient new clients to the program and facility, or facilitate peer orientation.
      • Respond to psychiatric and medical emergencies professionally and promptly, including crisis intervention.
      • Assist in evacuations during emergencies like fire or earthquakes.
      • Develop and support the implementation of treatment plans with client participation.
      • Communicate with referral sources and treatment personnel within and outside the agency.
      • Complete intake and discharge paperwork and maintain client progress records.
      • Participate in discharge planning for smooth client transitions.
      • Lead or co-lead group sessions and activities, adhering to schedules.
      • Coordinate case management responsibilities for clients.
      • Relay clinical and house-status information during shift changes and meetings.
      • Monitor and record medications, following program procedures.
      • Participate in meal planning and encourage client involvement, including joining meals.
      • Attend staff meetings, supervision, and case consultations.
      • Consult with supervisors on case reviews, medications, and group dynamics.
      • Maintain the physical plant, report maintenance issues, and perform minor household tasks.
      • Report suspected client abuse to appropriate agencies as per policy and law.
      • Promote social rehabilitation philosophy among staff and clients.
      • Work overnight, awake, and alert shifts as required.
      • Comply with all relevant laws, regulations, and policies, including the code of ethics.
      • Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director.
      • Notify supervisors of any personal circumstances affecting job performance.

      Functions for Persons with Disabilities (ADA)

      • Lead or participate in outings and recreational activities.
      • Shop for groceries and household items with clients.
      • Drive clients to treatment destinations.
      • Attend programmatic and administrative meetings as a representative.

      Minimum Qualifications

      • Bachelor's Degree in a mental health-related field; experience may substitute for degree.
      • Experience in residential treatment or social rehabilitation preferred.
      • At least one year experience in community mental health preferred.
      • Effective oral and written communication skills.
      • Good judgment and emotional stability.
      • Ability to negotiate stairs and lift/carry 20 lbs.
      • Ongoing clearance with California State Department of Social Services.
      • Training certification in First Aid and CPR.
      • Basic word processing skills.
