THE ROLE
Brightness in Black is a transformative three-year initiative focused on driving narrative change through the power of personal storytelling, community engagement, civic dialogue, and capacity building. Brightness in Black seeks to counter deficit-framed narratives about Black people and communities with asset-amplified stories of joy, pride, resilience, and excellence, which will be shared nationwide through a large-scale editorial and distribution partnership. Beginning in January 2024, StoryCorps will embed in select cities to cultivate robust community engagement through a range of activities– from year-long training and content creation partnerships, to community conversations and pop-up storytelling booths. Understanding that narrative change is a long-term, collaborative endeavor, StoryCorps will identify existing players in each community to bolster their efforts with our storytelling/media expertise and national microphone.
The Fellows Manager for Brightness in Black will play a crucial role in developing, coordinating and managing the activities of the Brightness in Black Fellowship Program. This will also include co-creating a Brightness in Black Fellows Facilitators Training Program. The Fellows Manager will supervise six fellows. Additionally, the Fellows Manager will be expected to serve as a Facilitator on recording engagements, as needed. When illness or emergencies prevent Facilitators from working the Fellows Manager will be required to travel to the recording location and facilitate interviews.
The Brightness in Black Facilitation Fellowship Program is an annual six-month initiative designed for college students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), as well as community colleges. These fellows will be facilitating and recording interviews in both selected communities where StoryCorps will have deeper, long-term engagements, as well as in our pop-activities throughout the country.
We seek to recruit and develop a staff whose diversity matches the diversity of the communities we serve, and we strongly encourage applications from people of color, the LGBTQ+ community, from people of all ages, political beliefs, and cultures.
