      As a temporary hire position supporting the County’s Stormwater Management and Site Development Manual update, you’ll play a pivotal role in how surface waters of Pierce County are protected during and after development. In this essential position you will assist in crafting updated language for incorporation into the Stormwater manual. You will have the opportunity to conduct literature reviews of stormwater science and benchmark our County’s manual with the State’s and other large jurisdiction’s manuals and regulations. You’ll be at the forefront of improving the usability and effectiveness of Stormwater regulations. Working alongside diverse teams—Development Services, GIS, Long-range planning and Maintenance and Operations and interested parties from the public —you’ll ensure that Pierce County continues to have clean and healthy streams, rivers, and lakes for generations to come.

      How to be Successful in the Role:
      Your success will come from utilizing effective communication, writing, and proofreading skills. Bring your willingness to learn and growth mindset along with your high degree of organization and detail focused personality to bear on this focused, fast-paced, and complex project. Your background and knowledge of environmental science, including stormwater and surface water will further enable your success. Proficiency in MS Office, project tracking software (e.g., Excel), will help you keep projects on track, making this a dynamic role where your technical skills will truly shine.

      Your Future in this Role:
      In this 6-month assignment you will gain experience in County regulatory processes and in-depth knowledge of creating technical stormwater documents needed to successfully implement surface water protections This experience will support your career development in the environmental policy, planning and technical fields.

      Core Daily Responsibilities:
      • Conduct research on specific topics related to stormwater management and surface water protection.
      • Proofread key documents, recommend edits and additions for clarity and useability.
      • Review technical drawings, figures, and worksheets.
      • Develop guidance material updates and forms.
      • Develop language to address key updates to the County’s Stormwater and Site Development Manual.
      • Assist with preparing documents for internal and external technical advisory committee meetings.
      • Manage work assignments to maintain consistency and quality.
      Preferred Qualifications:
      • Graduation from a four-year college or university with major course work in environmental science, engineering, planning, or related field.
      • Previous technical writing and editing experience highly desired.
      • Familiarity with surface water protection and stormwater management
      • Experience in managing complex projects or programs.
