      About Us:
      The City of Glendale Parks and Recreation Department is split into two distinct areas:

      The Parks Division manages and maintains all public parks, open spaces, trails, storm water retention basins, landscaping at municipal facilities and Thunderbird Conservation Park. The Division is also responsible for monitoring and ensuring the safety and security of park and facility use.

      The Recreation Division offers opportunities to enhance the social, physical, mental and economic health of our community through a variety of diverse recreation programs and facilities. Recreation programs and events are held at the Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center, the Glendale Adult Center, Historic Sahuaro Ranch, the five community centers and at basketball, tennis, skate courts and other recreation facilities throughout the city.

      The Role:

      The City of Glendale Aquatics Center is looking to fill multiple Temporary Aquatics Lifeguard positions for this upcoming 2024 Summer season (May-September).

      Under the direction of the Aquatics Coordinator, Pool Manager, Assistant Manager, or the Head Guard the Temporary Aquatics Lifeguard will perform job duties that include but are not limited to:

      • Being responsible for the day-to-day safe pool operations.
      • Maintaining firm and consistent customer service practices with staff and patrons.
      • Supervising swimming activities at city owned aquatics centers and ensuring that policies, guidelines, and safety procedures are followed.
      • Warning swimmers of improper or dangerous water safety behaviors.
      • Performing rescues and/or maintain crowd control during emergency situations.
      • Cleaning the aquatic facility, including but not limited to restrooms, changing rooms, staff areas, decks, and the pool.

      Hours, Pay, & Locations:

      Temporary Aquatics Lifeguard positions can work up to 40 hours per week and the position will earn a salary of $25.00 per hour.

      As a Temporary Aquatics Lifeguard, you may be assigned to work at either of our two Aquatic Center locations:

      1. Rose Lane Aquatics Center located at 5003 West Marlette Ave, 85301
      2. Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center located at 5600 West Union Hills Drive, 85308


      Temporary Aquatics Lifeguards are required to be available to work at both locations based on staffing needs.

      It is preferred that potential applicants be available during the entire summer aquatics season of May to September.


      Requirements:

      The Temporary Aquatics Lifeguard positions require either one of the following certifications:

      1. American Red Cross Lifeguard & First Aid Training R. 24
      2. American Red Cross CPR & AED for the Professional Rescuer R. 17


      If an applicant is a certified lifeguard from another entity, they will need to be "crossed over" to the American Red Cross certifications listed above.

      If you currently have the current certifications listed above, they must be valid through September 30, 2024.

      The City of Glendale offers Lifeguard Training for new Lifeguards between February and March 2024. If you are not Lifeguard Certified, you can register for Lifeguard Training by clinking the link here.

      Applicants must be at least 15 years of age to be lifeguard certified, but it is preferred that you be at least 16 years old as of May 1, 2024.


      Selection Process:

      The first review of applications for Summer 2024, will be conducted on March 20th, 2024.

      Candidates who are selected for an interview, will be invited to participate in our “Interview Day” which will be held on Saturday, March 30th, 2024. During Interview Day, candidates will be tested on a wide range of topics including water safety.

      Notifications of job offers for those that have passed the interview will occur by April 19, 2024.

      Please note, qualified applicants will need to meet the certification requirements before they are invited to interview.

      1. Be responsible for the day-to-day safe pool operations.
      2. Be responsible for keeping certifications up-to-date and valid in lifeguarding, CPR, and first aid training as well as public safety and rescues.
      3. Perform rescues and/or maintain crowd control during emergency situations by responding quickly and calmly.
      4. Maintain high standards of safety and skills/in-service training.
      5. Be familiar with and implement pool rules and regulations.
      6. Exhibit a friendly, critical details, and concise communication skills verbally and written.
      7. Maintain welcoming, firm, and consistent customer service practices with staff and patrons.
      8. Be knowledgeable and able to communicate details of City of Glendale Aquatics programs to patrons as well as other staff members.
      9. Monitor own schedules, hour limits, and report schedule adjustments to management as needed.
      10. Monitor facility functions to prevent accidents, drowning, and near drowning as well as report any oddities that should be addressed by management and / or maintenance.
      11. Monitor the activities of swimmers and patrons to detect and address problem areas.
      12. Perform rescue techniques and render first aid during emergency and non-emergency situations.
      13. Complete accurate and honest daily / weekly timecards, hours worked reports in MUNIS, accident reports, incident reports and inventory reports on time.
      14. Do the custodial cleaning of pool facility, including but not limited to restrooms, changing rooms, staff areas, decks, the pool, etc.
      15. Maintain adequate endurance and fitness through swimming and exercise.
      16. Assure the timely opening and closing of the facility.
      17. Become familiar with city rules and regulations for employees and patrons and be able to communicate these rules and regulations.
      18. Know the proper use of job-related tools such as a whistle, megaphone, rescue tube, and first aid equipment, among other tools.
      19. Only if Cash Handling Trained through the City of Glendale, employee will handle money in a safe and accurate manner and provides exceptional guest services.
      20. Takes, reads, records, reports problems and understands pool chemistry tests.
      21. Reports maintenance problems to Aquatics Coordinator, Assistant to the Aquatics Coordinator and possibly the Aquatics Maintenance Staff. May be asked to do some pool maintenance duties, for example, vacuuming the pool, placing the aerator or automatic vacuum in the water and turning it on and ensure it is working.
      22. Work at any City of Glendale Aquatics Location as assigned. Working at Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center as well as Rose Lane Aquatics Center is required. Working at city events and special locations, for example, splashpads or after school centers may be required of staff as well.
      23. Perform other duties as assigned.
      Minimum Qualifications:

      • Applicants must be at least 15 years of age to be lifeguard certified.
      • Must have an American Red Cross Lifeguard & First Aid Training R. 24 certification that does not expire before September 2024 or American Red Cross CPR & AED for the Professional Rescuer R. 17 that does not expire before September 2024.
      • Fluency to read, write, and speak English is required.
      If applicant possesses a current StarGuard certificate and can properly perform skills, they will be considered for hire. If hired, the applicant will be "crossed-over" to the American Red Cross certificates listed above.

      Preferences:

      • Applicants are preferred to be at least 16 years old as of May 2024.
      • American Red Cross Certifications are preferred.
      • Completed at least two years of high school preferred.
      • Previous work history in Aquatic Safety environment and / or customer service environment preferred.
      • Applicants are preferred to have a valid Arizona Driver’s License.
      • Ability to read, write, and speak Spanish is preferred.
      Special Requirements:
      • Maintain American Red Cross swimming skills.
      Physical Requirements:

      • Sufficient clarity of hearing with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern emergency situations.

      Working Conditions:

      • This position is subject to extreme heat and cold for periods of more than one hour and, subject to noise, sun exposure, and extreme weather conditions.
